Through my professional experiences, I have worked a great deal with individuals struggling with Alzheimer’s, aging, caregiver support as well as anxiety & depression.
Life is difficult! But it is important to know that you don’t have to do it alone. From personal experience, I know how a non-judgmental, safe, & empowering space can allow for self-exploration & personal growth. My goal is to be aware of your individual needs & put your well-being first. I utilize a client-centred approach that integrates mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy, & solution focused therapy to collaborate with clients on their desired goals & outcomes of our sessions.

Life is full of challenges, and by overcoming these challenges we can learn, grow, and discover things about ourselves, others, and the world around us. Sometimes though, these challenges become too much to handle. Perhaps we’ve experienced a loss, a major change, or a trauma, something that has taken away the sense of control over our lives and we find ourselves stuck and overwhelmed, no longer able to learn from life’s challenges, but feeling helpless to overcome them. For many of us, this sense of overwhelm leads to symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Is your mental health affecting your ability to function at work or as a parent or are you feeling stuck between supporting your child(ren)'s needs and your aging parents? Do you feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and frustrated by just getting through the day? Do you question how life could be better? Now more than ever parents are feeling overwhelmed by all their roles and relationships, parents feel uncertain about how they are supposed to manage their relationships, careers and their lives. Pushing away your needs and not taking time for yourself can lead to long-term issues for your mind, body and relationships.

The pain associated with grief is a natural yet deeply unsettling part of our human journey. My career in the helping profession started as a personal care provider for seniors. The experience brought me closer to families and grief. I have witnessed and experienced firsthand the depth of emotions that arise when we confront loss – whether it is the fading of a relationship, the shift in identity, the disruption of routine or the loss of a dear one. While the journey of loss is one we all share, the grieving process is as individual as each person I have cared for.

Over the last 20 years, I have worked with individuals and families, of all ages, in a variety of different settings. This has ranged from counselling in a family physician's office to front-line child protection and now, I am returning to private psychotherapy practice. The people I work with have often felt uncomfortable or uncertain about seeking help. They tend to have a sense of how they would like life to be different, but are at times, unsure of how to move forward and start the process of change.

Congratulations, you have taken the first step towards healing! Recognizing that you need support on this path of healing is the first of many milestones. When situations occur in our lives, whether in the past or present, naturally as human beings we begin to feel depressed, anxious, isolated, and etc. Simple day-to-day activities, which were once like second nature, have become very difficult. Perhaps days, months or even years have gone by and you still feel “stuck” – if this sounds familiar, we can work together to learn how to cope and live with a new reality.

Dementia Counsellors
Can dementia patients benefit from counselling?
Dementia patients can often benefit significantly from counselling. While neurologists typically treat dementia itself, counsellors provide crucial emotional support for patients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia can help clients navigate aging, end-of-life issues, social isolation, sleep challenges, and grief. They can also assist clients in adapting to the disease by addressing caregiving concerns and supporting family members. Counsellors will often also collaborate with a patient's neurologist or other medical providers to manage dementia symptoms and medication needs.
How can you tell if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's?
To determine if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's disease, there are several signs and diagnostic methods that medical professionals use. Early signs of dementia often include memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and challenges in completing familiar tasks. Diagnosing dementia or Alzheimer's requires a comprehensive approach, as there is no single definitive test, and initial diagnosis can sometimes be difficult as symptoms tend to worsen progressively over time. To make a diagnosis, medical professionals typically use a combination of methods, including standardized questionnaires and cognitive tests to assess memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, psychiatric evaluations to understand mental health status, brain scans to look for physical changes in the brain, as well as other medical tests to rule out other conditions.
What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?
There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but catching the disease in its early-to-moderate phases can be beneficial in order to initiate first-line treatments to help manage symptoms. Medications such as galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are examples of cholinesterase inhibitors that are commonly prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, working with a therapist or social worker can also often help patients with the disease address common behavioural and lifestyle concerns, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep problems, social support, and housing changes.
When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?
It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of Alzheimer's. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with medication and plan for the future in terms of housing, social/caregiving support, and finances.
