ADHD, Men's Issues, Couples, Stress/Anxiety/Depression- You feel stuck, hopeless, and unsure about where to turn but just know that you want to start feeling better. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, ADHD or motivation issues and this is complicating seeking help. Or as a man, you've been feeling bad for quite a while but society tells you to "toughen up" and get through it on your own. Your self-worth has taken a hit and feel lost. Whatever it is you're struggling with, I'd be honoured to help you navigate this tough time and work towards creating a more fulfilling, empowered life.

Feeling overwhelmed, sad, or constantly anxious can really weigh you down, making it tough to enjoy life or even get through the day sometimes. If you've been battling these feelings, you're not alone. Many people, especially men, find it hard to reach out for help due to societal pressures to "tough it out." But acknowledging that you're struggling is a brave first step towards feeling better. Whether it's stress from work, relationship issues, or past trauma that just won't let you be, therapy can offer the support you need to navigate through these tough times.

The pain associated with grief is a natural yet deeply unsettling part of our human journey. My career in the helping profession started as a personal care provider for seniors. The experience brought me closer to families and grief. I have witnessed and experienced firsthand the depth of emotions that arise when we confront loss – whether it is the fading of a relationship, the shift in identity, the disruption of routine or the loss of a dear one. While the journey of loss is one we all share, the grieving process is as individual as each person I have cared for.

My approach to counselling is informed by my own journey through anxiety, childhood trauma, and chronic pain. After years of debilitating pain, I became educated about how trauma becomes stored in the body, contributing to illness and psychological distress. A variety of emotional, cognitive, and somatic exercises focused at regulating the nervous system, rewiring the brain, and stopping physical symptoms allowed me to find freedom from chronic pain. I now dedicate my career to supporting and empowering clients on their individual paths to healing.

Life happens, I understand. We all go through our ups and downs every now and then. Facing your challenges alone can be quite difficult. In my practice, I support clients aged 16+ who are experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, behavioural concerns as well as trauma/PTSD. I also work with clients who would like to address their overall emotional wellbeing, process grief and loss, or adjust to difficult life transitions.

You're noticing changes in your child's behaviour; it doesn't make sense. They're acting strange, out of their character. Why does my child seem afraid; anxious? It seems like you've tried everything to help them feel better, but nothing seems to work and you're confused, fighting the feeling of helplessness. You find yourself walking on eggshells for fear of making the behaviour worse, because you don't understand what's happening.

Clients I work really well with are interested in collaborating and brainstorming about the challenging situations and difficulties in their lives. Overtime, we work together to develop understanding and solutions. I particularly enjoy working with individuals who suffer from ADHD or are impacted by someone who has ADHD. Of course clients with ADHD also often have co-morbid conditions like anxiety, depression and PTSD; I am very happy to help them with the issues related to these problems as well. Also, I enjoy completing complex psychological assessments; I find them challenging in a very good way.

When I was young, I wanted to be a writer. I went into journalism and that’s where I figured out why I was so obsessed with stories. True stories heal us. I have spent the last 30 years, both personally and professionally, in the field of addiction. I became increasingly sad as I witnessed the suffering that goes along with substance abuse and behavioural addictions. I learned as a volunteer and mentor that helping people uncover their true story also creates healing. So, I went to Yorkville University and obtained a master’s degree in counselling psychology.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
