Sexual Abuse Therapists in Angus, ON
Mental health is never static; it ebbs and flows with the unique realities of our lives through experiences of joy, trauma, growth, loss, relationships and everyday stress. Understandably, some of those moments' impacts will leave us bruised, lost or broken. The concept of becoming overwhelmed by one’s thoughts, feelings, or bodily existence can create a sense of chaos and hopelessness; a future that you, the individual daring enough to be in this moment, have determined is but a moment of your journey, not your story. Therefore, I offer a space where you can experience safety in exploration and guidance in the recovery of self.

How are you feeling? What are you thinking? What actions are you taking? Why are these things happening? Those are some of the classic questions asked by a therapist, but you’ve already been asking these questions. The answers are different for each person, and for different points in time. You might respond with, "I’m anxious, or sad, or angry", "I’m troubled about the past, or I'm worried about the future", "I’m drinking too much, or I’m distancing my family". Sometimes the answer is, "I don’t know, but I want to figure it out".

I have always had a passion for helping others. With previous work experience in different environments, I have been exposed to the complexities of life, which has developed my belief that change, growth and healing is possible if individuals are supported with compassion, empathy, and non-judgement. This belief has become my therapeutic approach, along with recognizing and valuing that each client is unique, making the therapy process unique.

Your story is important. Whether you are struggling to heal your past or find yourself feeling overwhelmed in the present, change is possible. We all face challenges in life and sometimes we need some support along the way. When we feel heard and understood, we can begin to heal and discover a new way forward. While I support clients in a variety of areas, I specialize in trauma and perinatal mental health (pregnancy, postpartum, parenting). Together, we can make connections between the past and the present, shift shame and guilt into self-compassion and help you live a life that's more aligned with your values.

I am a psychotherapist who specializes in helping individuals heal from trauma, relationship issues, and other concerns. I use a variety of therapeutic approaches, including “Parts work” which is based on the idea that each person has many different parts to their minds and psyches. Each of these parts has unique needs, wants, and beliefs and may be consciously or unconsciously helping or harming us as we move through our days. I help my clients integrate the many pieces within them to create more choice, expand their capacity to problem-solve, and to give them a greater sense of wholeness and aliveness in their daily lives.

Making meaning of our lives can become difficult when problems arise that we least expected. What if we have never experienced these things and coping isn't going so well, what do we do? What if the old familiar things keep happening? Sometimes our usual ways of staying focused and present are interrupted, even if we have managed before. I have been part of many healing journeys and one thing is the same in all of us: we must move through the difficulties with support in order to get back to our present. I am here to help you do just that.

Therapy shouldn't feel like a chore. While it might sometimes be hard to hear what is discussed in therapy, overall you should leave feeling like you've gained something useful or even transformative. Over time, you should feel you are getting stronger, more resilient and have shed layers of fear and anxiety. Of course this process can be overwhelming at times and you might not always progress on the timeframe that you thought you would, but when therapy goes well, you should feel more settled and more clear about your life. You should gain understanding about yourself and others and have a renewed sense of purpose and passion

Sexual Abuse Counsellors
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
