Hi, how are you feeling today? You may not always get to answer that question honestly. My hope is that one day you will, as you become more in tune with your emotions and your life. I specialize in substance/alcohol addictions, borderline personality disorder, Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders, and mood/anxiety imbalance. I like to focus on the impact your concerns may have on you, your environment, and your past/present family dynamics. I practice a psychodynamic and narrative approach to psychotherapy, which looks like walking alongside you, hearing your story, and exploring the best path to healing &wellness.

Therapy methods that I bring to treatment sessions include, Solution-Focused, Brief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Spiritually Integrated Psychotherapy.
The focus in therapy is on providing a safe and non-judgemental environment for you to talk about your concerns and take the steps needed to achieve your goals for treatment. I draw inspiration from my own real-life experiences that include a healthy and happy decades-long marriage which taught me a great deal about family dynamics and their impact on the various stages of the family life cycle. As a co-op advisor for many years at the University of Waterloo, I counselled students from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds on a range of workplace issues while helping them establish their career and academic goals.

Adults finding ADHD symptoms are impairing their personal relationships and/or professional role may need new coping strategies. Compassion and curiosity guide my support of young adults (& teens 15 or older) with ADHD, whose impulsivity or poor organizational skills often burdens them with guilt and low self-esteem. If a mood disorder or anxiety is interfering with thriving in your workplace role, together we will develop self-soothing practices for your emotional regulation and occupational success. To nurture clients' bounce-back from trauma or help couples stuck in conflict, I draw upon my clinical training and lived experience.

I utilize a tailored combination of modalities including Emotion Focused, Cognitive Behavioural, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Narrative Therapy.
Change is an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. Creating skills to navigate life’s transitions while preparing for the emotional experience of this journey, is where my passion lies. I work with adults and adolescents experiencing challenges in the aspects of anxiety, self-worth, emotional regulation, relationships (with self, children, partners, friends, co-workers and families), and life direction. I believe the understanding of a person's intrinsic motivations and value; comes from the reconciliation of one's thoughts, emotions and behaviours.

Are you seeking a therapist who respects your complex life experiences and does not ask you to fit in a box? I help folks explore identity quests, build self-esteem, healthy relationships and conflict-resolution styles, and understand anger, depression, anxiety, people-pleasing or avoidant behaviour, and trauma. With 6+ years of experience in working with folks who have faced and perpetuated interpersonal abuse, I deeply care about breaking the intergenerational trauma and abuse patterns. I advocate for men's mental health rights and support survivors of gender- and honour-based violence in co-creating their resilience narrative.

My areas of expertise are in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma Focused CBT, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Emotion Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
An important part of healing is understanding the connection between mind and body and how it relates to experiences of anxiety, depression, and trauma. A fundamental component of recognizing your needs is to create an awareness of emotions. Our bodies signal us when there is discord, and through an experiential process, I focus on helping individuals make sense of their world. My work focuses on coping with difficult body sensations while also helping you begin to think and feel differently about your experiences, your emotions and ultimately yourself.

At times, many of us contend with emotions and suffering that are overwhelmingly painful, disheartening and difficult to bear, often as a result of unique stressors and events. I work with adults, adolescents, families and step-families using Emotionally Focused Therapy, EMDR, interpersonal psychotherapy, and DBT/CBT within neuroscience and attachment frameworks. I encouraged clients to access inner strengths and free their capacity for growth. Whether you or a family member experience depression, anxiety, marital distress or difficulties with peers, you deserve support in a confidential, accepting, safe and caring environment.

Relationships can be our haven from these traumas, but they can also be the cause of our distress. Relational-based therapy can be a brilliant place to slow down and examine our patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving in the present moment.

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
