Attachment-based Therapists in Wolfville, NS
My approach is primarily attachment-based, relational, depth-oriented, and trauma-informed.
I support individuals and couples who want to improve their relationships, and adults and teens who experience anxiety, depression, effects of trauma, or significant life changes. I also enjoy working with professors and students, immigrants, neurodiverse, and 2SLGBTQ+ clients. Life’s challenges can be overwhelming and I know from experience that reaching out for help can be scary. I also know that therapy can be life changing. My counselling style is gentle and compassionate, geared to help you gain a deeper understanding of your struggles, cultivate self-acceptance, and foster personal and relational growth.

I believe that powerful healing occurs when our stories and emotions are truly seen and validated. My goal is to create a warm, safe space where you feel unconditionally accepted—a place where old wounds can be gently brought into the light, and your authentic self can finally emerge. My approach is collaborative and eclectic, and I welcome all parts of you, especially the ones that feel angry or rejected.

Do you need a moment to take a breath? Are you feeling lost or overwhelmed or stuck? Have you experienced loss or trauma? Is anxiety impacting your daily life? Do you find yourself asking “Who am I?” or “What do I want my life to be?” I can offer you a calm and quiet space where I will walk by your side as a companion on your journey as you move toward transformative growth. Art is a powerful tool that I use sometimes to help clients express and accept feelings; to explore a sense of self; and to reduce stress. Mindfulness, nature-based therapies, and a trauma-informed approach are also part of my practice.

I am a therapist and clinical social worker in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley. As a social worker, I approach mental health from a person-in-environment perspective. Poor mental health doesn't just 'happen'. It is a common outcome of struggling too long with problems or feelings we can't seem to solve or resolve, or losses that becomes too disorienting to cope with. Since 2012, I have been privileged to connect with and support clients of all ages and stages of life through many difficult circumstances. I currently provide clinical services to adults, teens, parents, seniors, and families.

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
