With 15 years of experience, I look to nurture safe relationships and acknowledge this as the most powerful tool when working with traumatized parts. Sexualized violence can cripple us in many ways. Trauma symptoms can fade and be put in the past for good, please know that lasting healing is possible. Progress indicators include feeling stronger emotionally, an increase in self-worth, and a decrease in triggers which help us feel present and connected to others. Sessions are paced at your speed. Healing is possible, and you have the right to feel it. Warmly, Selina.MSW, BSW, RSW.

My practice is informed through the lens of Internal Family Systems (IFS), Trauma-Focused Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (TF-ACT), attachment theory and somatic mindfulness.
Welcome! I am a Clinical Social Worker offering individual therapy to adults seeking support in the introspective work of healing your relationship to Self, attachment wounds, and relational traumas. You might be in an anxious-avoidant dance, noticing painful relationship patterns, feel stuck in a loop of relational ambivalence, or crave a deepened sense of closeness. Others might be navigating difficult family relationships and questioning estrangement and boundaries. Perhaps you are noticing a harsh inner-critic, self-doubt, the urge to people please, or a disconnection from Self (the person you are and want to be; at your core).

If you decide to connect with me for counselling I first focus on building a strong relationship with you to give us a foundation to work from. Whatever issues you are facing I am ready to partner with you to explore the history of the issue and work on making effective change happen. I use a Somatic approach which considers how your nervous system works, the effects of trauma / PTSD, and focuses on balancing the mind / body system. I also use a Narrative therapy approach considering identity and meaning making. Finally I incorporate Psychoanalytic theory and practice to consider life long human development.

I also have extensive expertise in working with trauma, with a specialized focus on attachment trauma, sexualized violence, gender-based violence, familial trauma, generational trauma, and the long-term impacts of oppression and marginalization.
With over 10 years experience as a trauma therapist, my practice is strongly committed to you and your needs for support and healing. I am especially passionate about working with folks in the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy, post-partum, and the early years of parenting. I have both clinical training and lived experience in navigating the perinatal period, and genuinely grasp the challenges of this time where folks are often bombarded with information and advice from the internet, social media, health and social systems, family members, and friends; much of which can feel more overwhelming than helpful.

I believe the most important relationship we’ll ever have is with ourselves. When we experience trauma, how we view our world, self & others, changes. Even after the trauma has passed, our minds make us believe we are still in danger which makes it difficult to feel calm. Trauma causes intrusive thoughts, cognitive distortions, flashbacks & nightmares, which can lead to depression, anxiety, avoidance & maladaptive coping strategies including substance misuse. Feeling overwhelmed & managing intense emotions can be difficult. If this sounds like you, I am interested in working with you to heal past wounds & regain a sense of control.

Hi! My areas of interest and expertise include working with people who have survived trauma and sexual abuse. Initially, I build rapport and a trusting relationship with you. One of our first tasks will involve identifying your strengths and what’s important to you; these are major components of allowing successful trauma processing and resolution to occur. I also enjoy working with adolescents; having once been a teen in need of additional support, I am able to empathize and quickly connect with young people. Other topics I support clients with are BPD, anger management, suicidal ideation, and self-esteem.

My specific areas of focus and interest include: parenting and family relationships, couples counselling, developmental trauma and attachment injuries, complex and/or chronic PTSD, Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, existential anxiety/depression, ADHD/highly sensitive people, and spiritual growth/development.
I see therapy as a creative, collaborative process. I am influenced by by the work of Carl Jung, and I have received post-graduate training in a diverse set of treatment modalities (EMDR, IFS, ACT, CPT, PE, EFT). I enjoy using a unique blend of EMDR and IFS for deeper trauma work, but I am also comfortable with more traditional forms of talk therapy. For work with couples/families, I use a family systems approach and am well-suited to helping couple/family units navigate neurodivergence such as ADHD, highly sensitive people (HSP), BPD and Bipolar Disorder. I am open to and encourage discussing spirituality in our therapy sessions.

Currently accepting clients. You might be experiencing distress from trauma or challenging life events or you’re finding it hard to cope. Maybe communication in your relationships has broken down leaving you more alone than connected. Here’s where I can help. I take the time to hear your story, explore the roots of your struggles and how it’s affecting you, and explore how to help you navigate through it. Together, we then create a plan that fits you, to help you regain a sense of hope, balance and vitality in life. Life is too short to be lived in significant distress, and sometimes we need a helping hand.

Trauma can affect our relationships and our sense of who we are, but we do not need to stay stuck in distress. Working to find a sense of meaning, reconnecting with the truth of our present moment, and untangling unhelpful narratives can help us reconnect with our authentic selves, making space for greater healing.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
