With 15 years of experience, I look to nurture safe relationships and acknowledge this as the most powerful tool when working with traumatized parts. Sexualized violence can cripple us in many ways. Trauma symptoms can fade and be put in the past for good, please know that lasting healing is possible. Progress indicators include feeling stronger emotionally, an increase in self-worth, and a decrease in triggers which help us feel present and connected to others. Sessions are paced at your speed. Healing is possible, and you have the right to feel it. Warmly, Selina.MSW, BSW, RSW.

I offer art therapy and therapeutic arts services to a diverse range of people. Many who choose to attend art therapy with me are looking for an alternative outlet to traditional therapy to aid with difficulties including but not limited to depression, anxiety, identity, transition, and grief. Previous art experience is not a requirement, and many forms of creativity may be explored depending on your areas of interest and comfort. I will structure sessions based on your needs, from planned directives to free art making, together we will discover what works for you.

Hi! My areas of interest and expertise include working with people who have survived trauma and sexual abuse. Initially, I build rapport and a trusting relationship with you. One of our first tasks will involve identifying your strengths and what’s important to you; these are major components of allowing successful trauma processing and resolution to occur. I also enjoy working with adolescents; having once been a teen in need of additional support, I am able to empathize and quickly connect with young people. Other topics I support clients with are BPD, anger management, suicidal ideation, and self-esteem.

My ideal clients range in age from adolescents through adulthood, including couples and families. They may have a past history of trauma or grief, or perhaps they are presently struggling with symptoms of ADHD, life changes, or a breakdown of a key relationship. They may be feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure where to go next. They will be open to trying new ideas to help them on the path to feeling better, but will not be worried about talking to me when certain strategies that do not work for them, as they will know it is best that we use techniques that they are comfortable with and will use.

Finding the right counsellor can be hard! I can resonate with the experience of seeking out counselling. It can be intimidating and anxiety-inducing. If you’re feeling this way, I want you to know you’re welcome here. Therapy is for all, regardless of what you are experiencing in your life. I am a married mother of two and grew up with four siblings. Relationship dynamics, whatever they might be, can be hard to manage. Your thoughts do not dictate who you are! Let’s work together to explore the feelings that are driving us, use them to our advantage, and create the newness you deserve.

You don’t always need a big problem to need support. Just dealing with life’s ups and downs can be tough, and everyone deserves help, even if they can’t put a name to their struggles. My goal is to create a safe space where you feel heard, valued, and empowered to explore your thoughts and feelings. I offer individual counselling for those aged 14 and older, as well as couples counselling.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
