Feeling disconnected? Perhaps you're struggling to exist in a society that doesn't feel like its accepting of you? I specialize in working with clients who often feel they diverge from societal norms. I have special interest in working with clients who may describe themselves as belonging to these groups: Neurodiverse, LGBTQIA+, Ethically Non-Monogamous, Kinky, and/or those involved in non-traditional family/relationship dynamics. If this is you, now that you are not alone! My experience may not be the same as yours, but through collaboration, we can work together to help find the best treatment methods for your unique situation.

Family separations can be extremely stressful and difficult times for both parents and children, but they DON'T have to involve court battles, high conflict, or huge expenses. If you are dealing with conflict over living arrangements, parenting time, child support, or other parenting concerns, I can help. With the right support, information, and guidance, most families can work through their parenting and support issues together, and come to a practical and sustainable solutions for themselves and their children. I also offer Voice of the Child Reports to families involved in a collaborative law process or other family mediators.

With over 10 years experience as a trauma therapist, my practice is strongly committed to you and your needs for support and healing. I am especially passionate about working with folks in the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy, post-partum, and the early years of parenting. I have both clinical training and lived experience in navigating the perinatal period, and genuinely grasp the challenges of this time where folks are often bombarded with information and advice from the internet, social media, health and social systems, family members, and friends; much of which can feel more overwhelming than helpful.

I have 15 years of experience supporting people of all ages, specializing in youth and family therapy.
Sometimes we are living at our best, in harmony with the highs and lows of life. Other times we are stressed, uncertain, overwhelmed and need help with the balance. Relationships are impacted, connections may be strained between family members, past experiences can affect the ability to live in the present moment. Major life transitions can be difficult, and feelings may seem too big to manage.

My specific areas of focus and interest include: parenting and family relationships, couples counselling, developmental trauma and attachment injuries, complex and/or chronic PTSD, Bipolar Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, existential anxiety/depression, ADHD/highly sensitive people, and spiritual growth/development.
I see therapy as a creative, collaborative process. I am influenced by by the work of Carl Jung, and I have received post-graduate training in a diverse set of treatment modalities (EMDR, IFS, ACT, CPT, PE, EFT). I enjoy using a unique blend of EMDR and IFS for deeper trauma work, but I am also comfortable with more traditional forms of talk therapy. For work with couples/families, I use a family systems approach and am well-suited to helping couple/family units navigate neurodivergence such as ADHD, highly sensitive people (HSP), BPD and Bipolar Disorder. I am open to and encourage discussing spirituality in our therapy sessions.

I help people through the issues that they encounter in school, work, with peers and family, helping them build a stronger sense of self.
Life is filled with struggles and challenges and they can seem difficult to overcome or even meet. Counselling helps people recognise the strengths that they already have to not only address life's challenges, but come out the other side stronger.

I have had the privilege of working with individuals, couples and families to navigate the challenges they are facing such as family conflict, grief and loss, infertility, anxiety, depression and life transitions.
At times life can become complicated by stress and adversity which is difficult to navigate on our own. My counselling philosophy is grounded in the knowledge that everyone has strengths and resources that can help them thrive and all of us need genuine caring relationships to live our best lives. Unfortunately, the challenges in our lives can cause us to lose sight of our strengths and strain key relationships leaving us feeling lost, confused and overwhelmed. At these times, counselling can help to explore these thoughts and feelings, identify meaningful solutions and restore hope and overall resilience.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
