I provide therapy for children and youth who are experiencing a number of life challenges, such as anxiety, stress, trauma or divorce. Children are ideal candidates for early intervention and lasting change is often realized in a short amount of time. In my work with teens, I use a holistic, mindful approach, offering them tools and guidance. Through exploring their life experiences, values and unique strengths, teens develop self-awareness, confidence and self-regulation.

None of us deserve to face life feeling alone. You deserve a safe space where you can feel heard; a place to work through whatever comes your way; and a place to gain tools that you can use to live every day to the fullest. Perhaps you have a child who is learning to work through their emotions, or you are a young person having a hard time at school or at home. Maybe you are a parent looking to find ways to connect with your child(ren) differently than you are now or you're an adult who is about to go through a big life transition and want a listening ear.

Accepting new clients in person and virtually. Welcome! I work with children, teens, and adults experiencing a range of mental health challenges. I am first and foremost client-centred and collaborative in my approach, which means we work together on how to best support your mental health. Some modalities I tend to draw upon are sand tray therapy, expressive arts, narrative therapy, and DBT. However, therapy is for you, and if something doesn’t resonate, we will shift gears until we find something that does. Therapy is a journey we walk together.

You’re exhausted and grumpy. You thought having a kid would make your family complete, but now all you and your partner talk about are diapers and schedules, and who is (or isn’t) taking care of the kids. It’s hard to hold onto the joy everyone tells us our kids should bring. You worry that things will never get better, and that you and your partner will just grow further and further apart. Even worse, you’re starting to resent your partner, your kid, and everyone else that makes it look so easy to have the perfect little family. It’s so lonely feeling like the only one who is struggling with life and family these days.

Yes, accepting new clients. Online booking at www.aldergrovecounselling.com. I will complete an initial assessment to help determine the depth of your depression, anxiety, unhealthy coping strategies and other areas that may be causing you to feel stuck. We repeat what’s familiar. Even though we know what is dysfunctional, and not working well for us, we repeat behaviours because they are familiar. Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to change its physical structure and function based on input from your experiences, which includes your behaviours, emotions, and thoughts. You can use your mind to change your happiness.

It’s difficult to watch your usually thoughtful child/teen struggling with their big emotions. Your child who is usually wise beyond their years becomes quickly unglued. You’re pretty sure that anxiety, worries or low self-esteem are hiding under the big tears, emotional meltdowns, ‘sassy’ attitude and anger. While you desperately want to be there to support your child and help them through this turbulent time, the accumulation of stressors from the demands of life and parenting through a pandemic make it hard for you to be the parent you want to be in those moments.

I am late diagnosed neurodivergent indigenous woman, so that certainly influences my approach.
Are you a neurodiverse person trying to navigate a neurotypical world? Or maybe you’re someone struggling with anxiety, stress, or dealing with chronic illness? Are you looking to make changes, develop coping skills and work on creating a compassionate environment for yourself where you have a greater understanding of your brain and how it interacts with the world?

I use a relational, client-centered approach to counselling that integrates strategies from Emotionally Focused Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, with a focus on a strengths-based approach. I have worked extensively in supporting children and their families through the course of my 25 + year career as an educator and a school administrator and I continue to do so in my counselling practice. Supporting clients dealing with life changes; illness, divorce and loss of a loved one are also areas of strength and experience. I am happy to work with clients virtually or in person.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
