I am grounded in holistic and trauma-informed approaches, and the mind-body connection, drawing on a blend of Internal Family Systems (informed), interpersonal process approach, polyvagal theory, mindfulness and self-compassion practice, and somatic work.

I specialize in the treatment of PTSD and other trauma-base disorders. Everyday, I see the devastating effects that PTSD has on people: hypervigilance, panic, insomnia, nightmares and flashbacks. Many also struggle with uncontrollable anger, isolation, suicidal thoughts, and low self-worth. PTSD may have led you to lose your employment, friends and family. It may have led you to engage in alcohol and drug abuse to escape your suffering and you may be burdened with a long list of medications to take. People do not realize how PTSD also wrecks havoc on their physical health. Many are discouraged by long and costly therapy.

We’re beings that live in our mind and body. Our state of mind plays a huge part in how we think, feel, and interact with the world. Current approaches to treating depression and anxiety, such as antidepressants, aren’t working. They can numb us to the world and don’t work for most people. Psychedelic therapies provide us with an avenue for healing that goes beyond medicine, working holistically to help you discover compassion for yourself, feel profound joy and love your life again.

I believe that there is a good fit for everyone in search of a counsellor. Notice what you find reassuring and helpful as you meet with your new counsellor, it could be their personality and mannerisms, pleasantness of the office space or the modalities they use. Don't hesitate to ask questions, make requests, and above all, if you aren't a good match with your counsellor, keep looking! The help you seek is out there.

I’m an eclectic therapist and draw from Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).
Life rarely follows a straight path, and it doesn’t come with Google Maps. Since 2006 I have been working as a therapist to support people as they navigate the messy journey of life - creating a non-judgmental space to talk through problems, learn new skills, or unburden things you’ve carried your whole life. Whether you spend your days driving forklifts, drafting documents, or raising kids, sometimes everyone needs a little help. I work with folks aged 19+ from all walks of life, backgrounds, relationship styles, orientations and identities. I have experience working with veterans and first responders.

I use an eclectic approach with my clients – Person-centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, and Compassion Focused Therapy to name a few.
My journey to this calling was gradual and almost natural – I have always had a longing to help others. Beginning the healing process can be challenging but I would be honoured to be a part of the process. I strive to create a warm and safe environment through empathy, respect, and compassion. A space where you can be your authentic self. I come from a non-judgemental stance and acknowledge that you are the expert of your own experience. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at Mount Allison University and completed my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology (MACP) degree at Yorkville University.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
