As a PhD provisionally registered psychologist with specialized training in evidence-based treatments for insomnia, I believe good sleep is the foundation for good mental health. I work with individuals to improve their sleep by addressing the root cognitive and behavioural causes of insomnia, such as reducing anxiety, depression, or doing “too much of a good thing” that interferes with sleep (e.g. addiction to nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis, or other impulsive/compulsive behaviours such as too much internet or social media use, pornography, binge eating, video games, or gambling).

I'm a good fit for people who are seeking affirmation and encouragement. Therapy can be a space to work on building the life you want, taking new steps: coming out, being authentic, shedding harmful ideas, changing relationships with family members, improving your relationships, building your community. Many of my clients have connections to LGBTQ and two-spirit communities and issues. You have the wisdom of your own experience. As a therapist I am a safe partner in gaining confidence, stating your needs and working towards your goals. I work with individuals and couples, adults and teens (and their parents).

What does your ideal life look like? What is getting in the way? Maybe you feel in the weeds - everything is tugging at your ankles, and you don't know how to get untangled. Pain, anger, self-doubt, and confusion won't stop tearing at you. Or maybe you feel you are in the wilderness, alone, afraid, and not knowing your next steps forward. Trauma, anxiety, or depression has caused you to lose your way. You wish you had an instruction manual - or at least an emotional GPS with a friendly voice - to steer you in the right direction and get you where you want to be.

Hi there! Finding the right therapist for you is one of the strongest predictors of success in therapy, but the search can be incredibly overwhelming. The fact that you are here means you have already taken the first (and often difficult) step in getting connected with the support you deserve. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, grief, or are just feeling lost, you are not alone. Therapy helps you to navigate your emotions, make sense of difficult experiences, develop strategies to cope with stress and worry, and find a greater sense of purpose in life.

The counselling process can take on many forms, whether it's about self-exploration and understanding, emotional processing, problem solving, healing, venting or feeling better about yourself and your relationships in general. It can be about drastic shifts or about minor adjustments. There is no 'one size fits all' in therapy! What clients have in common is that they are brave, willing to be vulnerable at times and have a desire to make a change in their lives, whether functional or emotional in nature.

Whether your grief is caused by a death, divorce, or any other loss, emotional incompleteness can have a lifelong, cumulatively negative impact on your capacity for happiness. If the resources available to you have not helped with your grief, it's not because of what's wrong with you. Grieving people have never lacked the courage, strength, or willingness to recover from loss, they have been given incorrect information on how to recover. The goal of The Grief Recovery Method is to help you complete your relationship to the pain, isolation, and loneliness caused by loss of any kind.

At Family Counselling Centres we recognize that therapy cannot be a one size fits all approach. Every individual is unique in how they respond to therapy. Accordingly, we utilize play therapy, animal assisted (horse and dog) therapy, EMDR, art therapy, filial therapy, sand play therapy, and traditional psychotherapy to provide clients with comprehensive care. We treat children, teens, adults, and families using both traditional and non-traditional therapies. We believe that people can live up to their full potential if a nurturing environment is available-- this is why we put such a strong focus on the family.

Life is challenging and difficult at times. It can create distress that affects every part of who we are: our thoughts, feelings, physical well-being and spirit, upsetting our ability to be effective with ourselves, others and manage the demands of our daily life. When we decide to reach out for help, we are acting courageously. Particularly if we do not have the energy or believe that things can be better. I am passionate about helping people. I work to understand the world from your point of view and help you gain a sense of balance and confidence to make positive changes in your life.

I wish to help you feel safe, validated, and heard. I am curious to learn your strengths and cultural diversities and collaboratively create therapy goals based on exploring and reflecting on your lived experience. I am empathic and compassionate and have faced the reality of life’s ups and downs; in this space, all emotions, tears, and humour are honoured. As a healthcare professional, I understand the pressures of public service. I invite healthcare professionals who wish to reduce stress and learn healthy coping mechanisms to work with me, and in addition, I would like to offer my services to those with chronic pain.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
