I work with clients who are finding their true identity and ready to release any aspect of themselves and their story that no longer serve them. This includes clients that have unresolved experiences from their recent or distant past that would like professional guidance in processing such from a trauma-informed and empathic lens. Clients that are ready for change and able to dedicate their energy to their own healing, in and out of session, with my support. Clients that may feel stuck, low-mood, unmotivated or confused in how to progress in life but are feeling called to evolve into a fulfilled & grateful version of themselves.

As human beings, we have a natural craving for connection, and when that connection is not found within and/or found outside, it can create a disconnect, and prompt various ways of thinking, feeling, and being. My quick analogy goes something like this... Life starts off as a blank book that we, and the world, begin to fill. It can be a beautiful collaboration, but it can also feel quite messy when trying to differentiate between your voice and all of the other interpretations. In this process, we will explore your book, and find your voice, making meaningful connections that start from within.

I help you get out of your mind… and into your body ;) Your body is where your memories/emotions are stored AND where healing longstanding stress patterns happens… so we might as well begin there. I specialize working with people who have complex trauma, grief, and anxiety/burnout. I have over 25 years of experience working in mental health and natural health. I offer a holistic approach (mind/body/spirit) to mental health and give you tools that work to help you shift your long seated patterns. I run my signature therapy group: Emotional Literacy to help you learn from your emotions, rather than being dominated by them.

Anxiety is hard. It sends us all kinds of difficult messages – makes us feel like we’re not good enough, like we can’t handle “it”, like all this is “too much”. It tells us life “should” be easier, you know, like it is for all those “other people”. Here’s the thing though – Anxiety lies. A lot. Learning about anxiety, the changes it makes in your brain and your autonomic nervous system, how your thoughts, emotions and behaviours are connected – can be a game changer. I can help.

My clients are just like you - to the outsider they appear like they have it all together. But on the inside something feels stuck, or at least worth exploring. I believe we are all trying our best to navigate the journey of life with the only strategies we know. Sometimes those ways work well for us, and other times they don’t. I am passionate about helping others grow their resiliency and capacity for emotional stress.

Feeling stuck? Let's talk about it. I offer individual (and couples) therapy with a focus on relational challenges, anxiety, and understanding/adjusting patterns and triggers. My practice is called Shift because that's exactly what I'm here to help you do; shift away from the behaviours, beliefs, and ways of thinking that are keeping you stuck or holding you back, and towards a life of awareness, connection and fulfillment - whatever that means for you.

Psychotherapy can improve our quality of life by expanding how we think, feel, and connect. My goal is to create a safe space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings. I work with you in a collaborative therapeutic relationship to develop goals that meet your needs. Therapy is an opportunity to make sense of your life and discover a path to meaning. With every step towards awareness comes a more profound understanding of who you are and what you desire for your life.

People come to counselling for a variety of reasons. I strive to meet people wherever they are on their journey, and help to ignite in them a renewed sense of hope. My goal is to help clients experience a greater sense of connection to both themselves and others. I walk clients through the emotional moments that define their sense of self, and help them reclaim a life of balance and calm. I work with clients at every stage of life, and I counsel those who are working through challenging experiences such as trauma, betrayal, anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, life transitions, and relationship concerns.

Life has its ups and downs and sometimes gets really challenging. So often we tell ourselves we can handle it, that things will get better, that it's not that bad, or that other people have it worse. Maybe we’ll fix it by doing more, giving more, pleasing others more. Everyone has their unique reasons to seek counselling. Often, it's for gaining support with a current challenge or life transition. Or, for support around long-standing unhelpful patterns and difficulties from the past. For adult women from their 20’s through midlife and into their elder years.

My services focus on providing clients with a family of origin perspective combined with practical strategies to manage dysfunctional thinking and behaviour to support lasting emotional change. This focus supports change across a wide range of problem areas. When clients understand how their family of origin affects them and how their thoughts and behaviours maintain problems, change comes naturally and lasting change comes with mastery of behaviour and thinking.

It is the normal experience of struggle and suffering that brings people to psychotherapy. You may feel that something in your life is not making sense or is not working. That may be a relationship, your reactions to life events, the past wounds of trauma that emerge, or other challenging experiences; it is all okay. Whatever it is that brings you in, I maintain that there is nothing “wrong” with you, that there is just something wrong for you. This perspective can seem completely foreign at first, however, it is the process of therapy that can shift the feeling of being “wrong” to an intuitive, felt sense that you are just right.

Within my practice, I specialize in working with children and adolescents and adults, specifically adults looking for parenting support/coaching and mothers entering into the world of parenting (prenatal, pregnancy, postpartum). My therapeutic approach is an eclectic one, one that is flexible to the needs of my client. It is very important to know that therapy is not a “one size fits all” approach and therefore I find flexibility in my approach to be imperative. I offer therapeutic approaches in the realm of talk, art, and play therapy. I have training in a variety of therapeutic approaches making my approach flexible to your needs.

We all need support at different times in our lives and I understand that reaching out for this help can be difficult. My therapeutic approach is to connect with you, where you are at, as the first step in our work. From there, we will strive to recognize where change is needed and how to create this change for a more manageable place in life. Understanding your story, respectfully and safely, then creating goals for success and how to get there, will be the direction of our work together. With my primary focus on anxiety, depression, family issues and grief, the ultimate outcome of our work should feel progressive and empowering.

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postal code, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
