Ready for something else? Life, and our relationships, can be messy, complicated, filled with emotions, and sometimes hard to navigate. If you seek help in making sense of your own past experiences or are ready to create new experiences (or identity) for yourself...you are in the right place.

I have a Masters of Social Work and specialize in women’s work.
My name is Laura Lockwood. I am a clinical social worker and therapist for teenage girls and women. I am passionate about supporting women in coming to a place of self-love and seeing their worth so they can reach their dreams. As women in our current society, we are often disconnected from our internal tools and resources that naturally exist in our mind and body. Our lives are fast-paced and stressful and we often struggle with mental and physical disconnection. This opportunity will give you a chance to take time to sit with yourself in a space that is supportive so that you can learn to access and develop your inner resources.

I am a certified psychotherapist with 15 years of experience working with trauma, any mental health struggles and addictions. I believe that humans are more resilient than they think and that it is important to stop suffering as we are here to thrive not to survive. Finding a therapist can be a daunting task, especially if you are new to therapy and not sure how to find the right fit. My goal is to offer you a safe space to determine what you hope to gain from therapy and how we can best meet your needs. Originally from Dublin, I am a white settler living on Treaty 1 territory. I am a cisgender lesbian and I specialize in working with members of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gender-questioning and transgender young people. As a queer mother, I also support other parents and would-be parents in navigating the unique challenges of making our families.

Accepting new clients - Are you or your child struggling and not knowing the path forward? Experiencing challenges is normal, but can be overwhelming. You do not have to do it alone! Often, having someone truly listen and assist us in unpacking our difficulties is what is needed to heal and move forward in the way we want to live. I believe healing happens best in a space where you feel valued, understood, and empowered with zero judgement. My approach is based on a few key aspects: relationships matter, a non-judgemental environment, a holistic and client-centred approach, cultural safety, and narrative/trauma-informed care.

I'm a Psychological Associate completing my candidacy with the Psychological Association of Manitoba and am registered with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association. Therapy is about reconnecting the pathway between our awareness of the world around us, the lens we’ve evolved from the inside out, and the physiological state of our bodies. A process that should be fluid and natural can become staggered when we experience loss, crises, confusion, addiction, traumatic events or relational dynamics, and chronic pain. Often this fragmentation can feel so “normal” that we don’t recognize it until life throws up a roadblock.

Hi! I work primarily with, but not limited to, major depression disorder and eating disorders (BED, AN, BN) in adults over the age of 25. I also work with anyone who wants help with understanding themselves better, what they want in life, or their interpersonal relationships. I use an eclectic approach, which means I take from different therapeutic modalities and don't have just one way of approaching issues. If you've tried other therapies in the past and found that they didn't work or didn't provide quite enough insight or help, then you may benefit more from this approach.

Showing up for yourself is a brave first step and you are worth it. Something is preventing you from living your best, most intentionally fulfilled life. You recognize something needs to change and you would like to understand the root cause of your anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic disease; to make some lasting positive changes. You are not alone; it would be my privilege to accompany you on your journey to wellness and support you in achieving your goals.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
