As a PhD provisionally registered psychologist with specialized training in evidence-based treatments for insomnia, I believe good sleep is the foundation for good mental health. I work with individuals to improve their sleep by addressing the root cognitive and behavioural causes of insomnia, such as reducing anxiety, depression, or doing “too much of a good thing” that interferes with sleep (e.g. addiction to nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis, or other impulsive/compulsive behaviours such as too much internet or social media use, pornography, binge eating, video games, or gambling).
I have found improving sleep problems can be an entry point to addressing other issues, including depression and anxiety disorders, ADHD, and trauma (PTSD). I use a cognitive and behavioural foundation that integrates techniques from the most effective interventions known to improve the most common conditions robbing adults of restorative sleep.
