I provide various forms of psychotherapy, psychological assessments, and psychological education to individuals and groups with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, OCD, low self-esteem, trauma, relationship problems, career-related concerns, and personality disorders.
Although pain, anxiety, and uncertainty are sometimes inevitable, it is possible to experience a good life when we develop and practice certain habits of the mind. In the process of working through our concerns with openness and curiosity, we can also cultivate psychological growth and resilience. In my work, I use the science and art of psychology to accompany you in this journey and help you reach your wellness and life goals.

I believe that when we come to therapy, we have the potential to heal ourselves. We are the masters of our own paths in life. It’s the circumstances in our lives—such as our social environment and various other factors—which can prevent us from living up to our full potential. I believe that through therapy, these hidden potentials can be realized. As a therapist, I act as a facilitator to help my clients see what they already have inside of them, foster self-acceptance, and help them reach their life goals through discovery of the self and of one’s own strengths.

How to find hope? If you are feeling STUCK, engaging in therapy can help you get MOVING again. Usually, you are someone on the MOVE, adapting to challenges, always ready for the next stage, with confidence and a SMILE! But this time it’s different. You may feel trapped. Pressing ahead and making desired change is hard. You may be struggling with finding yourself, a lack of meaning in your life, difficulty managing relationships, or processing emotions and unresolved trauma.

As a psychologist, I work with change. Change may involve shifts in awareness, attitude, behaviour, goals, acceptance, or coping strategies that will enhance your quality of life and well-being. Many obstacles can prevent us from living a satisfying life. These could be a history of trauma, invalidating relationships, habits that no longer serve us, or environments that may hinder our psychological growth. I can help you identify obstacles to your quality of life, develop strategies to tackle them, and set goals to increase and maintain your well-being.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
