Many people spend vast amounts of time and money getting an education, obtaining a driver’s license, planning a wedding, or achieving their dream job, but few people are willing to spend the same amount of time and money investing in understanding themselves, knowing their values, and determining how to choose a partner who is a good match for them. By educating ourselves about who we are and what we really want in our lives, we increase the possibility of living happier lives.

When we avoid what we need to face, we suffer the symptoms that bring us to therapy. We are wired to bear the pain of real life, but our psychological suffering can be unboreable. Sigmund Freud called psychotherapy “a cure through love” and I truly believe in this. The wounds that accrued in a relationship must be healed in a relationship. A relationship where the therapist doesn’t talk “at us” but “with us.” I believe all individuals can develop into mature, fully realized adults. However, inner or outer obstacles can make this path difficult. My role has always been to support my clients to remove these obstacles.

When life's challenges bring us uncertainty, fear, insecurity, and feeling out of control, it's not easy to make changes. In difficult situations, people often need a safe environment where their voices can be heard without judgment. Instead of solving the problem, they often spend their time and energy blaming themselves and others. They need constructive dialogue to address their concerns and solve their problems. They want to find positive solutions and take back control of their lives. Over the past 16 years, I have gained a lot of insight and expertise. supporting people is no longer a job for me, but my passion and mission.

Is reality therapy evidence-based?

Reality therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioural or acceptance and commitment therapies. However, some research does indicate that reality therapy might be helpful for people with addiction, and may be effective in treating social anxiety in young people.

How long does reality therapy last?

Reality therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Reality therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of reality therapy long after treatment has ended.

Does reality therapy work?

Reality therapy can help a person manage concerns such as eating disorders, addiction, substance use, anxiety, phobias, and relationship difficulties. This type of therapy encourages a person to be accountable for their behaviours. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure. Reality therapy can be useful in one-on-one therapy or in group sessions. This method may be used with children, families, and adults.

What are the limitations of reality therapy?

This therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the therapist focuses on choices made by the individual in the present day. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over others. This format may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every client.
