When we have suffered over a long period of time without much support or compassion, we come to rely on certain ways of being and relating that keep us safe but isolated from ourselves and those we love. This is normal considering what we have experienced. Trauma and lack of early nurturing skew our perceptions of ourselves and the world around us. Neither can be trusted, and this determines how we are in relationship within and with others. At the core of all of this is our longing to be in nurturing relationships because the need to feel loved, wanted, and accepted are so innate in us. Therefore, feeling the converse: rejection and shame is a blow to our very sense of self. We reject because we really want to be needed and accepted, and yet we are afraid. The pain we feel in this dichotomy is profound.

In my view, psychotherapy isn’t about merely “fixing” things or using tools to solve "problems." The ultimate aim of psychotherapy is to bring about psychological change, which is beyond “What we do.” When working with clients, I don’t rush or effort to get somewhere. If we go too fast and try too hard to achieve something, we will miss things that potentially can bring us learning about ourselves and opportunities for change. I use the NeuroAffective Relational Model (NARM) as the primary framework, which allows us to slow things down, exploring your heart’s desire and obstacles in the way of connecting to yourself and others.

The stories that we hold about ourselves and others, and the stories the world says about us, all shape who we are and what we do. I focus on helping clients make sense of these stories, which is informed by narrative and social justice principles, and my own lived experience as a racialized queer first-generation immigrant. Some common clinical issues I treat include anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, identity exploration, and stress management. I also specialize in supporting individuals with sexuality and gender identity concerns and BIPOC mental health.

I am interested to know your story. I would like to know what’s happening in your life, how it is affecting you, and how I can be of help. Difficult emotional experiences—such as loneliness, sadness, grief, confusion, and emptiness—as well as challenges like depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and a lack of direction or motivation, are part of the human experience that many of us face at times in our lives. Therapy can help us tune into our experience as a source of healing and reconnect us with our lives and ourselves.

At times life can be demanding and stressful, even more so if you feel alone and are unsure who to turn to for support and help. But no one should feel like they have to figure everything out on their own. I believe that every person is the expert of their own life but sometimes we need a new perspective or a safe space to talk, open up, and feel heard. As a counsellor, I offer my clients a non-judgmental, empathic, supportive space to fully explore their inner self, thoughts and feelings on their personal journey towards growth and healing.

Hello. Many people are negatively affected by anxiety and depression. However it's sometimes difficult to figure out why. Similarly many people find relationships difficult and complicated. Both psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) offer quick, effective ways to cut through symptoms and understand what is underlying our challenges. My work often employs short-term techniques, exploring thoughts and feelings around relationships, self-esteem or historical trauma, using a focussed and directed, but nurturing approach. I also offer long-term therapy when we need extra time to explore more complex issues.
