My ideal client is one who wants things to be different and is engaged in the counselling process. It is not necessary as I have made progress with resistant and/or mandated clients such as children or court-ordered clients, but it sure helps. The issues I can mostly help with include being hooked on certain thoughts such as worrying, anxiety, sadness, self-deprecating thoughts and obsessions and compulsions. I can also be most helpful when someone's behaviors are leading to avoiding experiences of life such as addiction, avoidance, distractions, and short term energy releasing behaviors. Clients want change.
Through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), I can help clients get unhooked from their unhelpful thoughts, and face life on life's terms, including the pain and suffering. They can identify what is important to them (values) and build a rich and meaningful life taking consistent action towards what is important despite how they think and feel.
We are all human. We all struggle, including myself. I pride myself on being able to connect with my clients on a human level where they feel understood and valued.
