The individual touched by ADD may also live with long standing problems with depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.
I am a marital and family therapist with over 30 years experience working with individuals and couples helping them negotiate and solve problems related to marital conflict, separation, divorce, and with difficulties adjusting to mental health problems. I am a teacher and supervisor in the field, so I am familiar with a range of intervention skills to help my clients with a wide variety of difficulties. I use their strengths to foster better relationships. I lately have a special interest in Adult Attention Deficit Disorder; its assessment and understanding of the relationship issues it poses for the individual and family.

As a psychotherapist and clinical counselor, I've worked 9+ years with diverse clients with various issues like behavioral problems, emotional regulation, PTSD, anxiety, depression, etc.
Throughout our sessions, I strive to create an environment of compassion, acceptance, and present moment awareness. I don't see myself as fundamentally different from the client, but rather as someone who can bring a fresh perspective to their situation. I believe that the client and I are both climbing our own mountains, and I can use my vantage point to identify obstacles on their mountain that they may not be aware of. In therapy, every struggle is important, and no one's pain is greater or less than another's. Together, we can then find new ways to navigate these obstacles and chart a new course towards a more fulfilling life.

Feeling the stress of life can be an overwhelming experience. Jennifer will assist you in your journey to creatively explore your movement towards mental health wellbeing. Trauma focused art therapy can be particularly effective for the client who feels stuck or who cannot talk about their difficulties. We will work together to develop a deeper understanding of yourself through creative exploration of your experiences.  I am particularly interested in supporting a systematic exploration of the clients sensory experiences, to encourage an understanding of their physical and emotional balance.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
