I help people through the issues that they encounter in school, work, with peers and family, helping them build a stronger sense of self.
Life is filled with struggles and challenges and they can seem difficult to overcome or even meet. Counselling helps people recognise the strengths that they already have to not only address life's challenges, but come out the other side stronger.

I address a wide range of problems including: stress & anxiety; depression; unresolved anger; forgiveness; grief; bitterness; low self-esteem; identity crisis; conflict; family issues; marriage conflicts; crisis intervention.
My approach is to allow you to bring your past into the present so that you can develop skills that free you to thrive in the future. I provide a safe, open and encouraging space to equip and free you to do three things: * identify automatic negative, limiting or unproductive thoughts and behaviours, and imagine a life beyond them; * move from the bondage of those thoughts and behaviours, into a freedom of intention and choice where you can live life with purpose and passion; * develop the skill to sustain this freedom on your own.

I draw on my experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt Psychotherapy, Family and Systems theory, Attachment, EMDR and Mindfulness based-therapies to meet you where you are on your current journey.
I have a special interest in supporting clients in their journey towards parenthood, and building a strong early attachment relationship with their child(ren). Becoming a parent can challenge you in ways you had never imagined, both physically and emotionally. It is never too early to reach out for support. This is particularly true for individuals who have experienced fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, traumatic birth experiences, or are struggling with their own expectations of what it means to be a parent.

How is your relationship with yourself, your partner and others? My primary practice focuses on counselling individuals who have caused or experienced harm with an intimate partner or their family. I also provide counselling to individuals who want to address stress, conflict or disconnection within their primary relationship and within themselves. We explore the impact of adverse childhood experiences, early abuse, violence or neglect on mental, emotional and social development and how those factors may later influence harmful actions, behaviors and perspectives. Together, we work to build awareness, healing, growth and change.

I am trained in the following treatments: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for Trauma, Prolonged Exposure (PE) for Trauma, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for depression, anxiety and psychosis.
Hi, my name is Steve Gates and I have been working in mental health for 15 years with 7 years working as a counsellor with the Nova Scotia Health Authority. In my work, I try to blend my training with your expertise about you. Using this approach, I have seen people make progress through situations that truly seemed impossible. In my experience, once people accept where they are and make realistic goals, they tend to make progress. The “feel better” part does seem to take time, but it tends to follow the changes.

I bring a wealth of specialized training experience in family play therapy modalities.
The best part about what I do is watching parents and children find joy in being together. I love to work with parents who feel disconnected from their children and lost about how to support them. After families have worked with me, I hope they leave with a deeper connection to each other.

With over 10 years experience as a trauma therapist, my practice is strongly committed to you and your needs for support and healing. I am especially passionate about working with folks in the perinatal period, which includes pregnancy, post-partum, and the early years of parenting. I have both clinical training and lived experience in navigating the perinatal period, and genuinely grasp the challenges of this time where folks are often bombarded with information and advice from the internet, social media, health and social systems, family members, and friends; much of which can feel more overwhelming than helpful.

I have particular experience working with individuals facing anxiety and depression, trauma, homelessness, addictions, trouble with the law, grieving, family/relationship issues and more.
Based in rural Nova Scotia, I meet clients in my home-based office, Zoom or phone, or can travel to clients' homes, depending on needs and preferences. I am experienced working with issues ranging from improving personal efficiency, life transitions, to profound trauma and grief. I believe strongly in working with clients' existing strengths to help achieve a more rich, meaningful life. I resist labels and diagnoses, rather want to focus more on clients' and families' empowerment, and how whatever labels they come up with contribute or interfere with life goals. You can also look me up at www.acadiantherapist.com!

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
