With more than 20 years of experience in the field of social work, I bring my life experience to my work with children, adolescents, individuals, families, parents, and couples. While raising three beautiful children with my amazing life partner, I understand that along with these joys of life, come challenges. I understand there is no recipe book for our unique relationships and journey. I understand the challenges of finding a sense of belonging, social identity, with marginalization, inclusion, and diversity. I would be happy to support the process of navigating your path.

I am a registered clinical social worker with over 30 years of experience. Most of my career has been spent working as a psychotherapist in the Anxiety Clinic at the Toronto Western Hospital (UHN). My practice is informed by Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Experiential Psychotherapy, and Somatic Psychotherapy orientations. I believe that therapy should involve a combination of acquiring skills that help to manage anxiety, mood, etc. as well as experiential work that helps to facilitate more transformational change at a deeper level. I feel that therapy should be a practical, safe, supportive, and collaborative process.

Hi I am Julia, (she/her pronouns) and the fact you are looking for therapy is an incredible first step. I have dedicated my career to helping adults and youth find there way back to themselves and out of really difficult, harrowing and challenging circumstances in their life. My career began supporting youth who were sex trafficked and has since organically evolved into supporting young people and adults living with the effects of trauma, sexual abuse, sexual assault, gender violence, depression anxiety, as well as a full spectrum of mental health concerns. I work with individuals of all genders and sexuality.

In moments when you need extra support, it's important to have a safe place to share your story and move towards a better quality of life - whatever that looks like for you. If you would like to have someone to listen and communicate with you nonjudgmentally, that space can be created here.

Hello! I have a passion for working with individuals struggling to find their way to a more peaceful and centred life, be it due to turbulent relationships, depression, anxiety or anything else life throws our way. I centre my practice on an understanding that people are more than their problems and that we have the ability to create space for possibility and change. I also have a specific interest in supporting Black and Afro-Caribbean people as I know first-hand the comfort derived from accessing a therapist with lived experience of anti-black racism.

The journey of life is ever changing, shaped by the experiences that emerge within our relationships, responsibilities, life transitions, and life goals we strive for. These experiences stir up a maelstrom of emotions, and we may not cope with them as well as we would like. When faced with feelings of depression or anxiety, I believe we all have the strengths and resources to address the issues that challenge us in our lives. I want to help you explore your thoughts and feelings, and help you uncover your hidden strengths so that you can overcome your current issues and build your resilience to confidently meet future challenges.

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? When most of our time is spent juggling responsibilities, working on relationships, and keeping track of all our worries, our own wellness can fall to the bottom of the long to do list. Entering into therapy is a chance to take a breath, reassess and figure out the best ways to move forward. It would be an honour to join you in that journey.

Hi there! I'm Kayla. I'm a psychotherapist who helps folks transform trauma and deepen experiences of presence and connection. My practice uses an experiential approach drawn from somatic, expressive arts, and relational psychotherapies. I am passionate about this work because I believe fully in our embodied potential for reshaping trauma through creative connection. Within my own life, and throughout my career I have witnessed how attending to our bodies through the arts can open up space for co-creating safe-enough and vibrant relationships.

How do you find hope? Your life is a blend of personal experiences and connections with others. You're in the process of figuring out how you fit into the tapestry of daily life. These formative years start early, and as you explore your identity and find your voice, it can often feel like navigating a maze. Maybe you're grappling with a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts, and you're seeking a safe and supportive space where you can freely express yourself.

When difficult times come, people are drawn to look at themselves. The habitual patterns of personality and relationships may no longer work or may be unsuited to who you are now. Feelings like shame, guilt and loneliness are painful. Unconscious defenses that protected you in the past can create problems rather than solve them and can actually inhibit your growth and freedom in the present. Therapy can increase self awareness, improve relationships, vitalize your sense of self, help you to discovery meaning and purpose, provide solutions to problems and reduce feelings of distress. Therapy is like a renovation. 30 years experience.

My approach involves careful and considerate listening, a kind of listening that is mostly not found in everyday communication. Listening together to what you say about your own life allows for us to have a very different conversation, creating the space for you to explore often overlooked or unconscious parts of your experience, parts that may be underlying the distress that has brought you to therapy. Psychodynamic therapy and psychoanalysis allow for speaking what was priorly unspeakable, effecting insight, change, and relief from symptoms.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
