We all have a story unique to our lived experiences, and I strive to provide a space for each person to feel safe and empowered. Our stories deserve to be heard with compassion and respect and without judgment or assumptions. When we feel safe, we can open up and allow ourselves to be seen, which takes courage. Working in the field of substance use for the past twelve years has allowed me to witness the strength, resiliency, and ability to heal that is in each of us.

Having worked in many fields from corporate sales to interior design to high risk youth group homes, I've experienced many different vocations and bring that understanding to my practice. My clients often appreciate my “tell it like it is” style mixed with humour (think SNL) and effective therapeutic interventions. I love working with a wide range of clients, including entrepreneurs, social advocates, and parents.

Something happened to you: a trauma, a broken relationship, a difficult childhood. Maybe you are telling yourself that you “should be over it by now” or “it happened so long ago". You have big reactions that you don’t understand. All the things you usually have access to, like your logic and your reasoning, seem to go away in that moment, and all you know is that something doesn’t feel right. Maybe these big reactions feel like anxiety, depression, being highly self critical or maybe on the outside everything seems fine, but on the inside you not ok. The truth is that there is no timeline for how events impact us.

I believe in a holistic approach to health where all parts of our lives are interconnected. These include the social, emotional, physical, and mental components. But moreover, we cannot forget the recreational, financial, spiritual, and familial. I believe everyone's story is unique and deserves the utmost respect, attention, and creativity to find the best path to healing, growth, and lasting change.

My clinical expertise focuses on anxiety, depression, trauma, attachment, neurodiversity, life transitions, abuse, and relationship issues. I have provided psychological services in non-profit and private practice. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and draw on a variety of interventions designed to help people be curious about their problems and explore new ways to approach interpersonal challenges. I am Certified in Lifespan Integration therapy and also have EMDR training. My research explored how some parents of twice-exceptional children thrived despite the extra challenges they faced raising complex kids.

I remember my first experience with a counselor…I was 16, nervous, unaware of the process and unsure if I would be understood due to my cultural differences. My upbringing, social influences, and experiences as the eldest daughter of immigrant parents have shaped my approach as a counsellor. I believe that a counselor is a guide in a clients journey of healing and self-awareness. My practice is rooted in a holistic approach and I utilize techniques that integrate physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual health. I am a Registered Clinical Social Worker and Registered Clinical Counsellor. I fluently speak Punjabi & English.

I enjoy working with adults and youth as they move from a place of surviving to a place of thriving. Freedom is one of my overarching goals for my clients: freedom from shame, anxiety, depression, and anything else holding them back from experiencing life to the full. These struggles are often symptoms we experience as a result of the hard places we have been and the ways we learned to cope with these hard experiences. I love being a part of this work of liberation.

A registered counsellor since 1994, I have worked with a wide array of clients. I have done much work with marriages and relationships and have developed a system that generally makes a significant difference within 6 sessions. For six years, I worked as an elementary school counsellor, working with over 450 children for a wide variety of needs. For 20 years, I worked extensively with Level 3 foster children, mostly teens. I also served as a prison chaplain so am familiar with criminal justice issues and addictions. Because of the diversity of my experience, I can generally relate to most clients.

Human beings need to feel seen and heard. We need a safe, judgment-free place to unload. We need to understand our own needs in order to teach ourselves and others how to care for us. We need to speak our fears, our thoughts, our questions, our hurt, our hopes and our shame in a safe space, learn where it all comes from and how to navigate it in a healthy way. We need to learn what to accept and what to change. We need to unlearn and relearn in order to achieve movement when we feel stuck. We need to replace negative self-judgment with self-compassion. We need to remember that we can do hard things, because we have done hard things.

I've been in practice for clinical counselling since 2010. Over the course of time, I have adopted a practical and evidence-based approach to clinical counselling. Some of my areas of expertise are anxiety, depression, inter-personal relationships, family of origin challenges, career/work and trauma. I have years of additional training under my belt but I've found that it comes down to the relationship between the counsellor and the client. In this case, it's what you know AND who you want in your corner. I enjoy working with a variety of clients, and most especially those who are ready to do the work to get the life the want!

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.
Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?
Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.
Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
