As part of a military family (spouse, sibling), I have an in-depth understanding of the specific culture, mentality, workplace-expectations, and higher probability of risks, illnesses, and disorders associated with these industries (OSI, PTSD, anger, family/marital strains, anxiety, depression).
Welcome! You have made the first (and often scariest and most challenging) step toward starting therapy: finding a therapist! Whether you are looking to improve your mental health, tackle some tricky issues in your life that seem to keep you in a cycle, or just want to talk to someone who can offer you support, you are in the right place. Rooted in a client-centred approach, I offer a supportive, nonjudgmental, and, at times, humorous environment to facilitate optimal growth for my clients.

We all encounter some degree of difficulty within our lives, and sometimes we find it difficult to navigate these hard times alone. If your relationships have become unfulfilling, or you are experiencing a loss of a relationship, difficult time communicating in your relationships, disrupted sleep, reduced pleasure in previously enjoyable activities, excessive worry/concern, workplace distress, job loss/transition, finding it hard to cope with stress and pressure of daily life, or finding it challenging in adapting to new roles within your life, then allow me to help.

I am a certified life & relationship coach on a mission to help relationships revive and thrive! I have worked as a counsellor in the field of addiction and mental health for over 15 years specializing in working with couples and facilitating relationship workshops.

I work exclusively with couples using the Gottman Method and can teach you the tools you need to reconnect, strengthen communication, and get unstuck. Perhaps you have the same fight over and over, struggle to balance the mental load and domestic labour, or want to improve intimacy. Maybe you've entered a new relationship phase, are navigating addiction recovery together, or just want to find your way back to one another and have more fun. I would be honoured to help support you in untangling unhelpful patterns and begin transforming your relationship.

In my practice, I begin therapy by building a trusting relationship with my clients, which lays the foundation for effective lasting positive results in therapy.
My ideal client is committed to healing from his/her current or past trauma/grief and are open to various ways of healing. Their goals are to obtain new tools to utilize when they are in crisis, feeling anxious, sad or disillusioned. They want to be at peace in the present moment. They want to be happy, content and confident in their choices. Most of all, they have hope for the future and they have love and compassion for themselves. They are easily able to forgive themselves and pick up where they left off knowing mistakes are one of their greatest teachings.

I am a Registered Psychologist and I work with families, couples, and individuals.
When we feel stuck or overwhelmed, reaching out to talk to someone about what we are going through is hard. It takes courage to trust someone enough to share our pain. With this in mind, my aim in therapy is to create a safe space to meet you as you are. The counselling experience with me involves your active participation, because you bring the expertise of your own life. As humans we are hardwired for connection; you don’t have to do this alone!

I work with teens, adults, couples and families, one of my main focus is how people relate to each other and their problems.
My experience is that we all deal with difficulties in our lives, perhaps one of the most damaging messages we receive early on is that we need to do it all alone and it's defeating feeling stuck and not knowing where to start. There's a pressure to change and do things differently, and succeed at everything, but as a person you live in a context that contributes to the problems you're facing. Change is hard and it happens through experimenting, failing and learning and it helps when gentle support and acceptance is present.

While I see individuals, couples, and families equally, my "specialty" is likely couples therapy.
I believe that clients' vast lived experiences contribute to beliefs they hold about themselves and in turn, the roles they play in life. These impressions - positive and negative - affect further thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and are often maintained by various external factors such as family of origin themes. Collaboratively, I help clients evaluate the legitimacy and usefulness of distressing "stories" that present in their lives, encourage new awareness of societal or extended family influences, and facilitate the exploration of new solutions whereby troublesome problems can be disempowered. Ultimately, my goal with clients is to help them access flexibility and new options.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
