I have experience in supporting a variety of mental health challenges such as anxiety & depression, with a specific focus in coping with cancer, life threatening illness & chronic illness, caregiver support, grief & bereavement, low self-esteem & abandonment.
It is common for individuals to feel stuck in their suffering. Recurring issues take up space within the mind & body, making it difficult to live in the present & within one’s full potential. I use an integrative & trauma-informed approach to build therapeutic relationships rooted in connection, compassion & empathy to help transform suffering into deep healing. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques including mindfulness, visualization & body-based interventions to help clients process their experiences & unresolved trauma, & work towards regulation. My practice is rooted in attachment theory & working with the nervous system.

I am Shawna - a passionate and innovative therapist who believes strong mental health is rooted in resilience and connection. Having worked exclusively with young cancer patients and their families over the past decade helped me realize that emotional pain and resilience are not mutually exclusive experiences - they live together. Through the process of recognizing and experiencing our deepest pain, fear and longing we can become better versions of ourselves. My style is empathic, intuitive, and interactive, and I uncover and guide my clients to use their untapped strengths, resilience, and potential for connection in their lives.

I work in private practice and at Sunnybrook Hosital's Odette Cancer Centre. I specialize in working with adults who: are managing health-related conditions like cancer; want to make lifestyle changes; and/or want to improve their mood and reduce stress. Of course, physical health doesn't operate in a vacuum and is often affected by state of mind, social relationships, finances, work situations, past trauma, family life and intimate relationships. With this in mind, I work holistically to support people to manage life stressors, mental health diagnoses, relationship problems and more.

I am uniquely skilled in supporting caregiver burnout - that's the mental, emotional & physical exhaustion you feel from the huge responsibility of caring for a loved one suffering with cancer, disability, or other health issues.
You may feel that no matter what you do, it's not enough. You carry a huge weight on your shoulders, which can be overwhelming. It takes courage to face the pain and grief of life's challenges. In my work as an arts-based psychotherapist, I am witness to my clients' courage and resilience on a daily basis. I offer a safe, supportive space to explore one's heart and uncover hidden strengths and resources together. My approach is collaborative, person-centred and trauma-informed. I have worked for over fifteen years supporting clients experiencing anxiety, stress, depression, grief and loss, family conflict, trauma, and disability.

Now as a stage 4 cancer patient, my model has slightly shifted.
I work with you to try to integrate the mind, body and soul. I believe these three elements of our being together heal and allow us all to work through our past or current trauma and they allow us to build our new future self. In my practice, the client drives the model that works for them, and my role as your therapist is to understand your objectives and support you in the direction to get there. A holistic sense of self is awareness on multiple levels, so a mind, body and soul exploration and transformation is crucial to understand and shift ourselves.

I would like to invite you into a non-judgmental, nurturing, and anti-oppressive space, where we can work together to address the challenges in your life. Sometimes life can bring hardship and unexpected events, which can produce negative feelings and emotions. Some of these challenges require less support to process and work through, while others may take longer and require more frequent support to overcome. As your therapist, my goal is to understand you, your needs, and guide you to cope with or overcome the difficulties interfering with your everyday life.

Living with an advanced or chronic illness can feel like a full-time job.Alongside regular responsibilities, you’re juggling countless medical appointments and managing symptoms, while carrying a heavy mental/emotional load. You may be grieving life before illness, anxious about an uncertain future, and be grappling with difficult thoughts about death/dying, the purpose of suffering, or how to live a meaningful life. The process of finding a ‘new normal’ is unique to everyone. At times, it can feel isolating and exhausting, but you don't have to do it alone.

I have ADHD, am on the autism spectrum. I've had related sex issues too. I spent the first part of my life wondering why I didn't fit in anywhere. Why wasn't I good enough to be loved, to be accepted, to be heard and seen? My journey to being an empowering therapist and coach began when I discovered I had ADHD. I was almost 40. It took yrs to find real help. It changed my life so drastically to finally understand my own brain and how to manage it, I had to become an advocate, a guide for those who didn't know how powerful and amazing they could be with this Super Brain. Let's discover what your ADHD Super Powers are.

Do you wish things were different? I work with diverse clients facing life's transitions and challenges. My theoretical framework is relational, using both talk therapy and/or creative/expressive arts modalities. Following your lead, I listen/witness and attune carefully in order to attend to your specific need. We start with where you are most comfortable, which means that talking, imagery, dreamwork and silence are all welcome. Although I work flexibly between short term talk therapy (psychodynamic psychotherapy) and expressive/creative arts, we safely build our relationship, while co-creating in our therapeutic studio space.

At times, life can be challenging. I've learned that these lived experiences are important in therapy. Whether it is a loss of a loved one, self-esteem, body image, family conflicts or care giver burnout…I’ve been there and I can help support you with that.

Accepting clients! Having been in counselling myself, I know what a relief it is to find someone with whom you feel comfortable to help sort out some of the stressors and troubles of everyday life. Perhaps you would like to chat about a number of issues that are piling up and you don’t know what to do. Or, maybe something really big has happened and you feel overwhelmed and like nothing in your life will ever be the same again. No matter what your concern, I'm driven to help you reach a life of peace and to no longer feel victimized by your struggles.

As a man, you face distinct challenges that often are not discussed. You might feel isolated, wrestling silently with emotions that seem to flare up, leading to anger or other reactions you'd rather not experience. You might feel disconnected from who you truly are, or have become so accustomed to unhealthy coping strategies that your own identity seems blurred. You may feel as though you're navigating this journey alone, but I'm here to assure you that there's a way forward - a path towards better understanding and healthier responses. Together, my goal is to help discover the real you and build towards a more balanced life.

Cancer Counsellors

How does cancer affect mental health?

A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.

What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?

The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?

Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.

How long does cancer therapy typically last?

The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
