I specialize in concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.
I work with clients who have experienced a life changing physical or psychological injury, or are struggling to find themselves after trauma or loss. I often hear clients say they, "just want to get back to normal," even though they struggle to know what "normal" could look like moving forward. They know how they want to feel, but are unsure of how to trust themselves as they navigate recovery, and are often uncertain about what their prognosis is. I provide support for navigating the complexities of injury rehabilitation, life transitions, return to work planning, and a space to debrief the emotions that come with this process.

Life can sometimes feel like a rough sea and counselling can help you navigate the turbulent waters. It is my goal to provide a space where you can work through challenging issues and provide support to navigate these areas of your life. I will support you by acknowledging your unique experiences and struggles with life circumstances, inviting you to explore new ways of coping. It is my belief that connecting to the body, using techniques such as breathing, noticing sensations, and recognizing how sensations are linked to feelings often provides insight and are powerful resources to work through emotions.

For many, the times we find ourselves in are overwhelming. Local to global issues magnify a sense that they will be never ending. Along with your personal concerns, perhaps you've struggled a long time to manage the despair, pain and confusion; feeling alone with it all. In trying times, we need others more than ever. Pain requires attention that heals it, not the kind that perpetuates it. We can do a lot on our own, but we don't heal alone. When no courage is felt, is exactly the time to reach for acceptance and support. Connection is basic human instinct. Now is your time. Make the call you deeply long to.

Life can bring interesting challenges. Usually we can manage on our own, but sometimes having a trained professional to offer support and guidance helps to identify solutions and allows us to move forward. I am a registered psychologist trained in the areas of neuroscience, assessment, counselling, and community rehabilitation and disability studies. I also have training in school psychology and also have an in-depth background in neurological disease/injury, family mediation, conflict resolution, developmental/complex trauma, and mood disorders. I also provide therapy and/or education for parents, kids and extended family members who are experiencing separation and divorce.

You may be hearing it from your partner, or from your kid's teachers and even from yourself that something has to change. I think of the 90's song, "I'm not sick, but I'm not well." You don't need to be in crisis or at your limit to seek help from a professional. Often seeking help is the first sign that you are serious about the solution and the growth that is inevitable. Change can be difficult, but you don't need to do it alone. I offer a practical and experienced approach to change, improved communication, self-regulation and acceptance of the challenges that are a call to growth. I work with children, parents and individuals.

This comes with 7 years of formal education, plus multiple practicums where skills are developed to ensure clients are getting the services they need. Our educations are supported by our own journeys, too. We know what the work is like, and how it feels to come out the other side. We want to help you do the same.

I'm a Psychological Associate completing my candidacy with the Psychological Association of Manitoba and am registered with the Canadian Counselling & Psychotherapy Association. Therapy is about reconnecting the pathway between our awareness of the world around us, the lens we’ve evolved from the inside out, and the physiological state of our bodies. A process that should be fluid and natural can become staggered when we experience loss, crises, confusion, addiction, traumatic events or relational dynamics, and chronic pain. Often this fragmentation can feel so “normal” that we don’t recognize it until life throws up a roadblock.

I help men that: struggle to understand and communicate emotions so instead bottle them up; overwhelmed with anxiety and anger; feel helpless and passive and thereby suppress their feelings; get lost and stuck in depression; struggle with low self-esteem; tried counselling but never discovered the roots of their issues, their progress plateaued, or didn't gain anything from it; and who struggle to achieve deep, lasting changes in their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. If you resonate with any of the above, you are ready to stop talking in circles about your issues and start tackling your problems head-on to make real progress.

Throughout her career, Angela has been working with individuals, couples, families, and groups who have experienced historical, shock and/or relational trauma and her educational training reflects this. When should someone seek treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

People should seek a diagnosis and treatment after a head injury, especially if they were unconscious, and an early diagnosis can lead to a better recovery. Signs of a concussion include headaches, nausea or vomiting, exhaustion, dizziness, vision problems, sensitivity to light and sound, problems with attention and memory, brain fog, unusual irritability or sadness, and unusual sleep patterns.

What’s the most common treatment for a traumatic brain injury?

Treatment for a traumatic brain injury will be different depending on the severity of the problem. For mild injuries, treatment may involve rest and over-the-counter pain or headache medication. For moderate or severe injuries, treatment may involve stabilisation, medication, and rehabilitative therapies such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, cognitive therapy, and counselling.

How long does it take to recover from traumatic brain injury?

The recovery time for a traumatic brain injury depends on the individual and the severity and nature of the injury; the length of time spent unconscious is often an indicator of severity. Recovery time for mild injuries may be a week or two while recovery time for more severe injuries may be six months to two years. Research suggests that the vast majority of recovery occurs in the first two years after an injury; recovery after that time frame is less certain.

What if a traumatic brain injury is left untreated?

If a traumatic brain injury is left untreated, it can lead to long-term physical and mental health problems. Physical problems may include dizziness, headaches, vision, healing, or speech loss, and an elevated risk of dementia. Psychological problems may include impairments of memory, judgment, and decision-making, depression, aggression, poor impulse control, and personality changes.
