I can support you through Covid-19. You need to make the most of your resources in the face of increased “situational stress”. At the same time any and all of your lingering distresses are made worse by the pressures we are suddenly under. People today are feeling trapped, worried, confused and at times overwhelmed. Some of that is new, and some is carried into this time. Both can be addressed. And the good news is we can work remotely without losing the personal qualities I bring to face to face work. Secure online video calls allow us to connect, establish goals, find insight, explore problems, and foster your personal progress.

Sometimes we all feel stuck. Our go-to methods of coping aren't working anymore, or we aren't getting what we need from those we usually turn to. Sometimes we need a space to be heard and other times we want someone to help us set some goals and take those first steps. In working with youth, individuals and families I bring curiosity, gentleness, humour and compassion along with knowledge of many therapeutic modalities which allows me to be flexible and tailor our work together to your specific needs.

Now accepting new clients. I'm queer and neurodiverse and I work with individuals, couples, and polycules. My focus areas: LGBTQIA+ support, clients with ADHD & Autism, ENM, polyamory, BDSM/kink, and climate anxiety. I work from an anti-capitalist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed foundation. My clients are often people who have already tried a million different ways to manage a particular challenge in their lives and are now feeling stuck and not sure what to do next. Clients say my approach combining traditional talk therapy with somatic/body-focused techniques helped them feel better even in the first session.

Hi I'm Cheryl. I have 25 years of experience working in the field of counselling. I only do private practice on Fridays btw 8-4:30 by phone, virtual or in-person. I encourage people to find their passion and restore their spirit while they are trying to overcome anxiety, depression, addictions, grief & loss or trauma. May-be you just lost your job, or found out a devastating family secret, or lost a pet, or your partner had an affair. No one person is the same in how we deal with loss, nor are any of us perfect. Whatever it is, I am here for you to embrace that pain, to learn how to integrate it, and find your next hopeful horizon.

"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions"- Dalai Lama. Life can be challenging. Navigating those challenges can feel overwhelming at times, but you do not have to do it alone. Reaching out takes a tremendous amount of courage and I would be honoured to be a part of your healing journey. I believe that a strong therapeutic connection contributes greatly to healing and that it is essential to meet clients where they are at in their own personal journey and work forward together.

People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. Learning to embrace your whole self, rethink your relationship to substances, navigate complex relationships, and process trauma, grief, and loss, are just some of the reasons to seek out support. Friends and family aren't always able to offer what we need and might even leave you feeling misunderstood, unseen and invalidated. A dedicated, safe space to explore our inner worlds, gain perspective on our pasts, heal from hurts, and find clarity, with the guidance of a therapist, can be incredibly powerful.

My clients are introspective, serious, and determined. They appreciate my wide experience, my role in their lives, and my open ignorance of their situations. What is it like to be you! We make quick progress and lasting changes because we take things from scratch. I'm most interested in what I understand the least, which are the roots of emotion, reason, body, and spirit. I don't know what's good for you; somewhere inside you, you do. Wherever you go, I follow, even when things get crazy (especially!), but you're always the expert. You deserve to prevail. (Note: my rates are in US$)

It is meaningful to me to create intentional and impactful relationships in my work and in my life. My art therapy training has offered me the ability to practice an integrated form of therapy, in which I draw from many models of therapy and many understandings of life. Art Therapy is an effective therapy for all types of people looking for pathways to mental health and wellness. There is no level of artistic experience that is necessary for art therapy - creativity is imbedded within all of us and is an invaluable tool in self-exploration and healing.

I work with younger and mid-life adults and couples, many of whom are experiencing difficulty with relationships, identity, anxiety, and depression. Other areas of concern might be spirituality or sexual orientation, or life direction. Quite often, people I meet with are employed in creative fields: art, music, film, tech, or jobs in social justice work. To get a sense of who I am, how I practice, and to access my contact info--check out my website or Instagram "byshariallen".

Nervous system dysregulation is the top cause of many of our modern day issues. This dysregulation manifests as anxiety, poor sleeps, chronic fatigue, difficulty in relationships, struggling with motivation and so much more. Do people describe you as too sensitive or insensitive? Do little things set you off? Maybe you feel powerless to control your moods and thoughts? Rebuild your capacity. Replenish your resiliency. Find regulation in your nervous system and rediscover sound sleep, a robust immune system, motivation to realize your dreams and an improved sense of self.

In Sanskrit, the human condition is known as "PurashArth" translated as the meaning of existence. That is we all want to be happy, we work towards being happy, and we seek eternal happiness. In my practice and personal lived experience, I have observed that we all have a desire to be 'seen', and 'heard', this is how we feel included. When these three are missing, we become stuck here and do not know how to step out into our true Self. I strongly believe that once we make that choice to seek our true Self, together the therapist and client evolve toward their goals. To find that peace and joy that is not in the far distance but here.

My approach with clients is to provide a safe and non-judgemental space to explore life challenges and work toward better functioning. I draw on different approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, solution focused therapy and polvagal informed theory in order to customize the counselling experience to the unique needs of the client. My practice is centred around values of curiosity and respect for the client’s lived experience, with a focus on creating more self compassion and internal safety. I believe that we can access internal strengths that foster improved wellbeing through increased awareness and intentional practice.

As a queer, transguy, and adoptive parent to a neurospicy child, I prioritize the importance of seeing people as complex, nuanced, and unique beings. I strive to keep my practice flexible, authentic, holistic, and avoid ‘one size fits all’ approaches that attempt to fit folx into little boxes. You deserve a space that will see you for who you are and your ways of being in the world.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are certified by one of the main professional associations, mainly the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and will have a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) designation with their name. Social Workers listed in the directory must be registered members of the college specific to their province. To be listed in the directory, Psychologists must be registered with the psychological college specific to their province or territory.

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given the considerable variation in professional regulation and prerequisites across Canadian provinces, some providers may possess significant professional qualifications without necessarily holding professional memberships or being obliged to acquire them. As a result, they may be selectively included without the "Verified" seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Psychologists, counsellors, psychotherapists and social workers can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Canada.

Psychologists have a master's and/or doctoral degree and have passed both written and oral exams. Psychologists are able to complete mental health assessments and provide diagnostic information to clients as well as provide counselling therapy or psychotherapy. Counsellors and psychotherapists are expected to have a master's or doctoral degree in counselling psychology, social work, or a related mental health discipline and certification by a professional association, such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Registered Social Workers possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work and where possible must be licensed or certified by the provincial government and/or regulatory college.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, the cost of a therapy session in Canada could be between $100 and $200. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. Some types of outpatient mental health services are covered by Medicare, provided these are performed by a licensed mental health professional in the provinces or territory you reside in and who accepts the assignment.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postal code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Professionals licensed by regulatory colleges and those certified by associations such as the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association are obligated to uphold client confidentiality unless there is a legal reason that requires them to disclose information. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others, or a court order, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
