Being human is an intricate adventure, filled with challenges that can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. I understand how overwhelming and isolating these experiences can be, especially when they leave us feeling lonely, fatigued, self-critical, anxious, hopeless, panicked or consumed by obsessive thoughts. I recognize that adolescents and neurodiverse individuals often face additional difficulties. As a counsellor specializing in supporting youth, young adults, and parents, I am attuned to the complexities of these emotions and how they affect you in various aspects of life, including school, work, and relationships.

I have a specific area of practice - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. OCD is considered to be a debilitating, chronic, and sneaky condition. OCD often latches on to what is most sacred and cherished to us. It can cause us to question our morals, values, and beliefs. Much time and energy is then spent trying to gain relief from doubt, uncertainty, and distress. Breaking cycles of Obsessions and Compulsions is key to regaining intention, peace, and freedom.

Life can be overwhelming, painful and isolating. These struggles may show up as constant anxiety, panic, chronic fatigue, loneliness, fearing the worst, dreading the days ahead, being critical of yourself, never feeling good enough and obsessive thinking. Often I support individuals experiencing repetitive issues and unhelpful patterns. These may show up in their relationship with themselves and others, at work, school or in their parenting. If you are a parent struggling to support your child, or If you are feeling stuck, limited, or are suffering alone - you are not alone and will likely benefit from some additional support.

I support clients managing emotional challenges, BPD traits, depression, OCD, perfectionism, negative internal dialogue, addiction, grief, trauma, and difficult family dynamics. Together we explore a client's history, experience, emotions, and develop better skills for managing challenges. Often old coping strategies are no longer serving the client. Developing relational intimacy with others, and more compassionate communication with self is integral to my work with individuals and families. Together we find solutions for healing and moving forward in healthy ways so clients can align more authenticly with themselves.

My passion and experience includes counselling children, youth, and young adults with anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, OCD and neurodivergence.
As a neurodivergent and highly sensitive person, I understand what it is like to experience the world with greater intensity. My person-centered approach situates the client as their own expert, with myself as the guide towards a variety of counselling goals such as increased self-awareness and insight, building a toolkit of skills or unlearning maladaptive ways of feeling, thinking and responding. Utilizing mindfulness, somatic, cognitive, emotionally focused, dialectical behavioral, harm-reduction and narrative techniques, I strive to help clients 10 and up regain agency through acceptance and management.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
