I bring in aspects of motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy, and narrative therapy.
I am currently only accepting new clients for my DBT weekly virtual skills group. Everyone has the ability to change. I am a Registered Social Worker with expertise in trauma treatment, concurrent disorders, and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. I am an advocate for and a member of the LGBTQ+ community and am passionate about working with individuals and families to strengthen relationships.

My practice is decolonial, person centered and strengths based, and includes modalities such as narrative, emotion focused, and solution focused.
I strive to meet people where they are at, and work alongside them in a good way while holding up their strength and dignity. We both have a lot to learn from each other, and I always want to honour where you come from, and where you have been.

Narrative, collaborative and mindfulness approaches are central in how I approach therapeutic conversations.
I am committed to seeing people as more than just the problems they may be struggling with. I value conversations that allow the richness of people's lives to become more visible and accessible to them. After more than 20 years of practice, I continue to feel privileged to accompany people as they sort out life's difficulties. I see adults across the life span in relation to a range of life concerns, including: depression; anxiety; work-life balance; disordered eating and body image difficulties; sexual, interpersonal and workplace trauma; relationship issues; grief and loss; life transitions and identity questions.

I am informed in the use of CBT, DBT, Narrative and Internal Family systems, using any of these methods we would work together to build an awareness of the things causing you issues and work to reframe and shift the narrative.
It is important to feel seen and understood. There are lifestyle choices that often don't get the support they need because of the stigma created around it. My lifestyle may mirror those needing that empathy and compassion, having been a serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 20 years, being Indigenous, LGBTQ and a single parent and belonging to several other communities which face stigmatization because of the way we live.

You can expect me to show up with curiosity, compassion, kindness, presence, flexibility, and a deep love for this work. I believe healing happens through authentic relationship, so I bring my full self into counselling. My hope is for you to show up exactly as you are, and know that you are seen, heard, and accepted.

The clinical names for this work include Somatic, Mindfulness-Based, Narrative, and Emotion-Focused/Experiential Therapy, but all we are doing is tapping into your natural resilience.
As a therapist, I listen to you, showing you how to listen to yourself. Do you struggle with anxiety or depression? Do you notice painful repetitive patterns like damaging relationships playing out in your life? Are you struggling to build a joyful, healthy life as a person living with challenges like neurodivergence? I believe that building a stronger relationship with yourself and learning how to heal even when you're not in a therapist's office could be important for you. By doing work that is well supported by research and facilitated by a therapist (i.e., me) with a lot of lived experience, you can change in incredible ways.

Narrative Counsellors

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioural therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds — perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
