I have attended specialized trainings in Psychodynamic Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy in the past 10 years.
Hi, welcome! I have been practicing counselling for seven years working with clients with a variety of issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationships, self-esteem and personal growth. My Asian cultural background as well as my personal experience as an immigrant to Canada also afford me an insight into immigrant and second-generation ways of being as well as their mental health concerns.

I have a passion for helping children, teens, and young adults navigate life's challenges. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic theory, which allows me to delve deep into the unconscious mind to uncover the root causes of emotional distress. However, I also believe that creativity can be a powerful tool in therapy, which is why I incorporate art, play, and other expressive techniques into my work. Additionally, I draw on a range of other therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, to meet the unique needs of each client.

Relational psychodynamic group therapy involves developing insight, understanding unconscious patterns, and nurturing healthy attachments.
I offer psychodynamic group therapy, which is highly recommended for those who have grown up in invalidating/harmful environments in which they were not heard, and rarely attuned to. You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, attachment injuries, heightened shame, existential questions, and have a desire to develop a better relationship with yourself along with others. Prospective group members have largely moved beyond immediate trauma responses and are looking to explore more deeply.

Whatever your challenge, I welcome with curiosity and acceptance all the different parts of you so that together we can work to understanding what your needs are and what gets in your way.

This ranges from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, through to psychodynamic approaches and into Mindfulness.
For 30+ years I have been helping people struggling with relationships, as well as depression, anxiety, and meaning of life issues. My primary interest has always been in understanding what it is in the work we do together that actually makes a difference in helping the people I am working with, coupled with a clear recognition of the fundamental importance of the quality of our relationship together. Ultimately, I am not just trying to help people feel better, but to actually become better, recognizable both by them, and the people who matter in their lives. In the final analysis, you already have the answers. I help you find those

My values-centered approach integrates psychodynamic, existential, and analytic schools of thought.
The people I work with tend to be caring, open-minded, and high-functioning folks who at times march to the beat of their own drummer or have a unique perspective, who may struggle at times even if they don't show it, and who like to ‘get to the heart of things’ in their relationships, in their work, and in their engagement with life. Many things in this life can hurt us, our habitual defences against pain can muddle things, and sometimes we just get lost. Whether you are in the process of healing yourself, fostering deeper connection with others, or pursuing a life well-lived, I am here to support you.

Drawing from empirically-supported treatments, I use CBT, psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness and psychoeducation to guide my work.
As both a therapist and a researcher, I aim to address the dynamic and lived experiences of those impacted by intergenerational trauma, aspects of culture and acculturation, sexual distress or intimacy-related concerns. I often work with individuals, particularly the daughters of immigrants, who present well on the surface, seem completely put together when they want to be, and whose problems are not always apparent to others. While things might appear to be going well on the outside, privately they are hurting. Sometimes the source of distress is clearly known, other times it has yet to be discovered.

My counselling practice is influenced by several therapies and approaches (narrative, psychodynamic, cognitive, relational, internal family systems, spiritual care and art therapy).
I am excited to work with people to find meaning in the messiness. I value collaboration, compassion, curiosity and openness — and I support connection, community and expression. I bring non-judgement and a deep thoughtfulness to the more unpleasant parts of human experience, and I encourage coming into relationship with these aspects, and exploring ways to create a more meaningful, fulfilling life. In my one-on-one counselling, I support you in moving through the discomfort that comes with exploring your life’s challenges. Our work together will offer ways to explore what brings meaning to your life and human relationships.

I use a relational strengths-based approach with elements of mindfulness, gestalt, CBT, social justice & psychodynamic approaches, helping you decrease anxiety, improve your mood & experience more confidence & hope.
We can't say goodbye to a problem until we say hello to it. If you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, depressed, alone or hopeless, therapy is a place where it's OK to talk about the hard & confusing things, where you get to tell your truth as you see & feel it. If you experience shame, guilt, disappointment, regret, anger or resentment in your life, counselling gives you an opportunity to understand yourself better without being rushed or judged. Listening to all the parts of you that want to be heard can lead to a sense of relief, better relationships & sleep, feeling more grounded & living a more meaningful & authentic life

I am largely guided by psychodynamic and Internal Family Systems (IFS) approaches.
I believe that all problems that seem to defy solutions are directly affected – even determined - by how you experience and relate to yourself and others. Exploring the psychological meaning and emotional sense you attach to your specific internal struggles, feelings, and experiences can bring new insights and creative changes to your life. I am deeply committed to facilitating a safe, trusting relationship that can help you heal, grow, and become more fully yourself. I work with a wide range of individuals and couples, focusing on helping people create healthy and fulfilling lives in their internal and external worlds.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy assists people in overcoming longstanding personal struggles or self-defeating patterns that have been resistant to change and brings to light personal experiences which often remain unacknowledged or whose meanings feel unclear and/or uncomfortable.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Counselling Supervisor. My practice is guided by extensive experience working with people coming from various socioeconomic backgrounds as well as many years of serving the most vulnerable communities in Vancouver’s DTES. While my approach is integrative of modern theories and techniques, it heavily relies on Psychodynamic theories and practice. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a highly individualized treatment whose goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptom. It relies on the fact that our personalities are uniquely shaped by several developmental stages.

I primarily work within a psychodynamic psychotherapy framework.
My expertise is in working with difficulties related to cultural, familial, and relational contexts. I specialize in depression, anxiety, anger issues, professional burnout, issues with sexuality, couples issues, family conflicts, self-harming, and more. In addition to having lived in Hong Kong, I have worked diverse clients in Los Angeles and Vancouver. People who are seeking to make sense of themselves tend to find me very helpful. Former clients of mine regularly feel as though they understand their symptoms, are more free to make good life choices, and are prepared to have more fulfilling relationships overall.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
