My work is relational, emotion-focused, and experiential. Relational means establishing a unique and real connection with people — i.e. not being a “blank slate” therapist. Emotion-focused means helping people pay attention to old emotional patterns that may no longer be serving them. Experiential means going beyond just talking about patterns. It means offering actual in-session experiences of doing things a different way — working together to form new and preferred patterns that are conducive to one’s therapy goal(s).

Do you feel distressed but don't understand why? Have you tried different methods and it only helped a little but never get ahead? Have you ever wondered what the core issue is? Working with me might find you those answers. A lot of people ask who gets counselling, I believe that anyone who experiences stress could get a therapist; however, many have amazing family and friends that allow them to bounce ideas, inspire motivation, and provides insight so counselling really isn't needed. Most people wait till they are in crisis to get help which would mean a rough journey to baseline. Let's be preventative rather than reactionary.

0ver 15 years of experience in Mental Health, I have dedicated a career supporting adults addressing challenges related to Trauma, PTSD, Grief & Loss, Life/Role Transitions, Relationship Problems and Communication, Addictive Behaviors, Anxiety and Depression. Therapy can be a personal and supportive journey to help you realize your strengths, goals and dreams as you try to overcome many of these challenges. As a therapist who identifies as older, male “person of colour", and an ally of LGBTQ+ populations, I bring to counselling a unique perspective and also acknowledge that it is your story to tell and therefore must be honored.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Counselling Supervisor. My practice is guided by extensive experience working with people coming from various socioeconomic backgrounds as well as many years of serving the most vulnerable communities in Vancouver’s DTES. While my approach is integrative of modern theories and techniques, it heavily relies on Psychodynamic theories and practice. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a highly individualized treatment whose goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptom. It relies on the fact that our personalities are uniquely shaped by several developmental stages.

Life has its ups and downs, and sometimes things can feel too much to be with on your own. I support people to better understand themselves, deal with life's stresses in more constructive ways, and foster meaningful connections. As a gay man who grew up in a conservative Christian environment, I especially enjoy working with men, queer folks, and those who have experienced religious trauma. Further, I work with couples looking to improve their communication, deepen their emotional intimacy, and work through hurts and betrayals.

I believe that we all experience discomfort in our life. It can be physical, mental or emotional but it is all connected. Feeling down, stuck, angry, hurt or sad is a part of being human but it doesn't meant we cannot do something about it. Injuries are a normal part of life. Some are caused by us and some are caused by others, some are physical and some are emotional, some heal quickly while others seem to never go away but there are things we can do to help or hurt the healing process. Using a variety of techniques, we can work together to develop a recovery plan that works for you.

I work with individuals and couples who seek to improve their mental health and relationships. I work with individuals, who experienced trauma, struggling with anxiety, and/ or seeking meaning to life events. My unique life experience exposed me to different cultures and ways of living, which included the Middle East, Europe, and North America. I believe that relationships, mental health, and behaviors are better understood when body, mind, and context are examined simultaneously. I work with my clients to navigate through their experiences, including their spirituality, to create helpful meanings in their lives.

"Problems" in our lives often try to lead us to focus solely on resolving or avoiding them at all cost. In both cases, we are forced to sacrifice other parts of ourselves as a result. However, the more we sacrifice, the more "problems" take up of our space and time, leading us to feel overwhelmed and trapped. Despite the pressure to immediately "fix" things, reconnecting instead with our values, core beliefs, needs and aspirations can help create alternatives to problem-saturated narratives and, ultimately, can lead us towards solutions.

If you are reading this, then you have taken the first courageous step in a long journey of healing and self-discovery… Or maybe this journey began long ago, but now you are looking for a new direction. As a counsellor, it would be a privilege to witness and support you on this journey. I specialize in supporting male clients who are new to therapy. Men who I have supported have a unique set of needs that if properly addressed make therapy more productive and contribute to long-lasting change. Here are some common reasons for coming to therapy and topics we can address in our first session:

Although you’re surrounded by familiar faces, there’s an underlying feeling of loneliness and isolation that seems to follow you wherever you go. You long for deeper connection in your relationships, but you just can’t seem to find the right people or circles where you feel at ease. As someone who has many sides to their self, it constantly feels like you have to sacrifice parts of your identity to fit in. You’re finding it harder to enjoy the activities you once did and you’re overcome with exhaustion or restlessness as you try to get through your day. No matter how hard you try, it feels like there’s something missing.

You swear you’re not going to drink today, but when 5:00 pm rolls around, you find yourself reaching for a bottle. You’ve tried everything to control your drinking – taking a break for a while, drinking only on weekends, or only in the evenings, or never alone, or only beer – but nothing seems to work. You’re tired of the hangovers, the arguments, the mornings waking up with guilt and regret. While drinking used to make everything better, now it seems it’s making everything worse. But while you know you have to do something about your use of alcohol, deep down, you’re not sure you can live without it.

Counseling is, thankfully, no longer considered something reserved for individuals with severe mental health concerns. Today we are increasingly comfortable admitting many would benefit from dedicated space where our personal concerns, challenges, and goals can be carefully tended to. My clients learn quickly that therapy is about dialogue and consistent attention to their sadness, depression, anxiety, worries, and difficulties in different spheres of their lives (relationships, parenting, work, money, environment, to name a few). Clients often seek a deeper sense of purpose and engagement, therapy can help achieve this.

Have you ever noticed that there’s a part of you that longs for adventure and risk and another that’s attached to security and predictability? Such as when a friend invites you to an event, there’s a part of you that wants to go, and another that just wants to stay home? Speaking of which, who is the one noticing and watching these often conflicting and polarizing voices? Which one are you in all of this? If you are looking to build awareness of and work with your inner conflict to find clarity, purpose and meaning, then I may be able to help you.

If you are searching for a respectful and non-judgmental couples therapist, chances are you've been struggling for a while, just hoping things will get better on their own. My work is focused on couples conflict, relational trauma, and sexuality concerns. Whether the problem is infidelity or another traumatic event, lack of interest in sex, drifting apart in your relationship, or constant bickering and rehashing old arguments, the problems facing you as a couple can be overwhelming. It's natural to feel vulnerable and at the same time yearn for a safe place to talk it out with someone who can help.

It takes courage to seek and begin therapy, and I value and respect that. I am passionate about working with all people, however they choose to identify themselves. I work with adults, young to old. I consider each individual as a "world unto themself"; I work with your goals, your spark, your way. My goal is to help you find the tools to move towards what you most want. I'm on your side. I draw from therapies such as solution focused, trauma based, CBT and ACT. Possibility lies in the present - what we do, how we choose to act, alone and with others - this is the arena of change.

Life is really hard and often painful. We all need support to find our way through this confusing and challenging existence. It truly helps to let our walls down and share what we are going through in safe, caring, and genuine relationships. This is what I am offering. From this place, you can find firm footholds and solid ground inside of yourself, empowering you to confidently move toward the future that you want. At times, the coping mechanisms we develop aren’t as effective, sustainable, or healthy as we need them to be. I want to help you learn how to care for yourself and get the most out of your life and relationships.

I go by he/him/his and I work with folks who are in the marginalized group(s) (gay/bi/queer, person of colour... etc.) who experienced discrimination and/or sexual and physical assault who wants to have more options to respond and understand themselves.
