I see individuals, couples and families through virtual care and in-person (downtown Vancouver).
Grief / Loss and Trauma leave us feeling completely overwhelmed, anxious, feeling like no one else can understand what we are going through and often utterly alone. Sometimes just trying to get through the day feels impossible and we can't even think straight. Sometimes we know that our behaviours today are linked to the terrible thing that has happened but we aren't sure what to do about it. I see individuals who are looking for relief. They are looking for someone to help support them as they regain their footing, develop strategies to manage the anxiety and reprocess the loss and trauma they have experienced in a safe way.

With a broad base of life and work experiences, I counsel adults of all ages living with loss, trauma, mood imbalance, and anxiety. Three values guide my practice: connection, growth, and balance. A safe and trusting environment in counselling supports a therapeutic relationship, which can inspire changes in other relationships. Small changes can have a huge impact over time. Lifelong, each of us continues to develop, often learning from our mistakes and suffering. Balance is the key to health. There is healing power in the connections made between the body, heart, and mind.

I am a Jamaican living in Vancouver. As a recent immigrant, I am aware of how the process and experience of forging a new life can bring both satisfaction and distress especially in intimate relationships. Life transitions can cause emotional stress and often, we need help to tap into our own inherent strengths. Sexuality and sexual behaviours can also be challenging for some but, I am passionate about working with individuals and couples of all genders, orientations, races and ethnicities. I also specialize in addictions which I view as a maladaptive coping skill for traumatic situations.

We live in a complex, challenging society, in which private and work-related issues can affect our lives. There are moments when you may feel confused, fatigued, when everything seems uncomfortable, and you long for a positive change, but the way ahead is still unclear. Regardless of your age or relationship status, my aim is to help you regain clarity and understanding about yourself and the challenges you face, such as emotional isolation, stress, anxiety, relationship issues, and significant life changes.

Some of the areas we may work on include: Healing the wounds of the past; Managing difficult emotions; Changing unhealthy patterns; Learning to treat yourself with compassion; Making decisions that serve your wellbeing; Improving communication; Setting boundaries; Navigating challenges in relationships of all types: partners, family members & friends.
My approach to counselling is fundamentally about building a genuine relationship characterized by support, care and encouragement. A space where it is safe to speak the truth about what has happened in your life. The kind of relationship that welcomes your whole self to be present, including the parts you don’t like. A place where you are received with compassion and acceptance, no matter how much anguish, confusion, rage, shame or despair you might be feeling. I know from my own experience that this kind of relationship creates the conditions for deep inner healing to occur and holds the potential for profound personal growth.

A Registered Psychologist in Vancouver since 1980, I am passionate about exploring the subconscious mind, assisting my clients to clarify and accomplish their goals, personal and professional. My ideal client has some knowledge of themselves and is deeply motivated to change. Patterns that respond very well to hypnotherapy include smoking, emotional eating, addictions, phobias and insomnia. Hypnotherapy can clear sabotages to success, blocks to self esteem, blocks to creativity, procrastination, fear of public speaking, and help athletes achieve optimal sports performance. Relationships: I love to work with couples experiencing relationship issues, helping them learn to express and listen to each other from the heart.

As a registered clinical counsellor, I help people find inner calm and clarity, tame unwieldy emotions, and improve relationship harmony and communication.
Life isn't always easy. Sometimes you feel at the mercy of painful emotions and ruminative thinking. You sense that you're meant to feel more ease and contentment in your life. Relationships are important to you; you crave feeling understood and accepted for who you are, but conflict and miscommunication can leave you feeling alone and distressed. Your way of coping isn't always the healthiest. You're starting to wonder if your desire for change is big enough to overcome your resistance to therapy.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
