My framework involves an approach of each client's unique situation from a Cognitive Behavioral lens influenced by Mindfulness.
Life presents many challenges to the various domains of wellbeing. The stressors can manifest through negative or difficult thoughts, overwhelming emotions, and ruptures in our relationships with others and our selves. As a consequence, we may struggle with harmful or addictive behaviors, or overly critical self-talk, which may lead to anxiety, depression, burnout, chronic stress, and many other difficulties. Unfortunately, in the midst of overwhelm we often feel disconnected and isolated from those in our lives. I aim to create a supportive empathetic therapeutic relationship that encourages the growth and wellbeing of each client.

Through my clinical work and life experiences, I have found many of us as humans do not take enough time to slow down and attune to what is truly going on internally within ourselves, which can lead to unresolved issues in life. As a therapist, I use a strength-based, somatic, person-centered, Adlerian, and mindfulness approach to help empower my clients to practice embracing and embodying who they truly are. I believe when individuals start operating in a space of honesty with their true authentic self, it can allow decisions to be made with more ease and help filter out unnecessary noise from the external world.

I invite an integrative approach into our sessions pulling from mindfulness and positive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural theories, narrative and emotion-focused, through a trauma informed lens.
We are all travelling through life, finding and losing track of ourselves. there comes a time where we may feel unaligned and stuck with our current path. Bringing awareness to our path allows a moment to recenter ourselves to understand where we’d like to go next.

I draw from a humanistic perspective to create an integrative approach, pulling from cognitive behaviour theories, mindfulness, and emotion focused therapy.
I believe the most important connection we have in life is the one we have within ourselves. Throughout life, we cycle between finding and losing track of ourselves. We are constantly changing, depending on the struggles we face. I believe that we need to be reminded of the empathy, warmth, and compassion we have for ourselves.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
