Alcohol Use Therapists in Sechelt, BC
Hi, I’m Rebecca, and I’m a Registered Counsellor, Trauma Specialist, Clinical Herbalist, & Coach. I’ve spent most of my life working with people, animals, plants… all living things really. I have a passion for supporting others in their journey back to the root of who they are. Helping them find the essence of what makes them feel whole and complete. We are all humans, perfectly imperfect in every way. We are unique, contradictory, seeking, and doing our best with the tools that we have available to us. I believe that our stories are sacred, and we have the power and the right to choose who we share our stories with.

Life has a way of challenging us in ways that can stop even the strongest of us in our tracks. Increased stress, sudden life changes, anxiety, unresolved trauma.... many things can trigger disruptive behaviours and emotions that throw us off-base, damage our health and relationships, or simply hold us back. If your mental or emotional well-being, your relationships with others or with yourself, or your ability to deal with problems is out of balance – whatever the issue or stumbling block, a safe therapeutic relationship can help you return to, or develop a greater sense of ease and well-being.

You CAN live without anxiety, stress, overwhelm or burnout! Numb, stuck or simply surviving? We live in crazy times! You’ve lived, loved, worked, possibly married and divorced, raised a family, cared for aging parents, surely succeeded in your unique ways and also dealt with life’s natural challenges and losses too. If a helper-type, other’s needs have likely come before your own. Life happens, and often not how planned. Whether anxious and stressed, have a heavy heart or upset emotions, stuck in unhealthy patterns of thought or behaviors, in loss or life transitions, unhappy in relationships, we ALL need support to shift / grow.

We all have things we’ve been told about ourselves that we internalize and start telling ourselves. Do you struggle with a story or belief about yourself that holds you back? Does this cause you some stress, loneliness, conflict in your relationships, or even lead you into misusing alcohol or substances? Now, more than ever, a lot of us are feeling disconnected from others and under the spell of negative stories about ourselves. In my practice, my team and I believe that these stories can be rewritten, that we are each the author of our own lives.

Seeking therapy is a sign of a personal strength, not a weakness. It takes awareness in our lives and courage to be able to reach out for help. Often people who engage in therapy are actually doing well in life but would like to do better in one area or another. I believe that the client is the expert on them and it is my role to support them to reach the goals that they set. Now excepting virtual clients in British Columbia.

Alcohol use doesn’t have to ruin your life.
You swear you’re not going to drink today, but when 5:00 pm rolls around, you find yourself reaching for a bottle. You’ve tried everything to control your drinking – taking a break for a while, drinking only on weekends, or only in the evenings, or never alone, or only beer – but nothing seems to work. You’re tired of the hangovers, the arguments, the mornings waking up with guilt and regret. While drinking used to make everything better, now it seems it’s making everything worse. But while you know you have to do something about your use of alcohol, deep down, you’re not sure you can live without it.

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
