Anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, OCD are common diagnoses I can help with. Many of my clients tell me they're looking for "something different." than the usual counselling approaches. What if we viewed many diagnoses as normal reactions to stress and trauma? What if we could learn to understand the meaning of your symptoms? Using somatic & talk therapy, we untangle anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, (etc.) to understand what they mean and how they occurred. EMDR and psychedelic integration unlock deep trauma and expands capacity for love and understanding. You don't have to be alone anymore.

I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Gottman's Couples Therapy.
*Accepting new clients* Hi there, my name is Jonathan. Helping people work on the challenges they want to work on so that they can become a better version of themselves is my work. By using an integrative approach, I support people by helping them discover and explore practical solutions for their life circumstances and their relationships. What works best for you is what is important, not following a set of instructions or trying to fit you into a prescribed way of life. Counselling is about working together to improve well-being and focusing our efforts to do so, so let's work together.

My curiosity and intention to be of real help has led me to in-depth study of therapeutic approaches that include the body and mind: Attachment-Focused EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, Mindfulness, Focusing & Psychedelic Integration.
I offer an individualized approach to adapting & growing with life challenges. The primary concerns I work with include: traumatic or stressful experiences, grief & loss & the symptoms of depression, anxiety, & insomnia. I begin with learning what is important & meaningful to you, clarify your present concerns & also how you will know when our work is done(!) Therapy takes time, energy & commitment but does not go on forever! I find it most effective to meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis until we evaluate our work is done, or a less frequent schedule makes sense. Note: I work only with adults in individual or group therapy.

Life can be overwhelming when we’re juggling multiple responsibilities while taking care of ourselves and others. Particularly when something unexpected arises, our balance can be disturbed. Navigating life’s challenges can also become more intense when hidden parts of ourselves, or others, arise and dominate situations, making them hard to understand. In these times, it is not surprising that so many people turn to therapy for illumination and support.

In addition to talk therapy, I offer clinical hypnosis sessions and EMDR.
Becoming a new mother is a tremendous change, and one that can sometimes trigger old soul wounds and a need for healing. My approach is individualized, as each new mother experiences her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum time in a unique way.

While my early background was in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), I now rely on Internal Family Systems (IFS Level 1 trained), EMDR (certified practitioner), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
In my practice, I work with adults struggling with various issues from anxiety, depression and eating issues, to trauma, grief and relationship difficulties. We all have our own history of experiences, and we tend to react in specific ways under stress. While our response was likely our best option in the past, it may not be adaptive now. I can help you resolve past traumas, learn to accept what is, and move forward from there - developing ways to a fuller and more satisfying life.

Looking for a counsellor or trauma therapist? Not sure where to start? Are you wanting to make changes, feel more at ease or comfortable in your body? Many of the people I work with have experienced painful things, either in childhood, adolescence, adulthood or throughout their life and it’s affected how they feel now. Sometimes it is numbing or quick to anger. The journey of becoming whole and healing can be started in a caring, safe space that is created in counselling.

Is your relationship going through a difficult season, where you dread that another discussion will end in an argument, without apology? Are you facing a major transition and could use someone to help bring clarity? Do you feel stuck in some way – as though life or your relationships just aren’t what you’re hoping for? Do you feel alone as you find yourself struggling to manage difficult emotions like anxiety, sadness, guilt, shame, or anger? Maybe you’ve always felt different from those around you - it can be exhausting and lonely. As a person with disabilities myself, I have my own experience of the challenges of trying to fit in.

Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs), in our tender years, whether they were caused by abuse, neglect or chronic parental mis-attunement are not only impediments to thriving in one's life, they increase the risk of serious physical disease in later life. Whatever hurts inside is simply asking to be known and loved. I believe that the difficulties and traumas of life need never define us as human beings. Rather, I believe that when safety, skillful caring and authentic connection are finally available for us, these very traumas can become the doors through which we discover our own unique gifts, talents and power as individuals.

Traumatic life events come in many forms. People feel powerless and groundless; often experiencing life on autopilot. If you experienced a traumatic event as a child or the care you received involved toxic amounts of stress, abuse or neglect, a variety of attachment wounds can interfere with your present-day relationships, parenting abilities, and general well-being. Experiencing loss, rejection, abandonment, abuse or neglect disrupts development and changes our focus to survival. There is no timeline for healing from trauma, but it is possible to recover and create the life you desire.

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimising its ability to trigger anxiety.
