One of the most difficult things to do in life is to ask for help. I understand that making the first call is stressful, and I am open to hearing your concerns as soon as we connect. I encompass a non judgmental approach, based on strength and resilience. I work collaboratively with my clients to empower them to make important changes in their lives. As a counselor, I support each client's own experience of their story. Do you feel overrun by thoughts of self-criticism? Are you exhausted trying to maintain relationships? Sometimes we function well outwardly, but inside we are fighting feelings of anxiety, sadness, anger and thoughts of never being good enough. In therapy, we connect to parts of ourselves that we try so hard to hide. We explore struggles in current situations, past experiences, and connect with our emotions. My therapeutic approach is grounded in forming a strong connection with my clients to help create a safe space in which you feel heard. My hope is to support you through your life transitions, and be part of your journey.

Sometimes we’ve been wounded. We are bitter and end up in hard places. We are in relationships that have grown painful, disappointing, even hopeless. It seems there are insurmountable chasms, and we are stuck with nowhere to go. Sometimes the hard places consume all our joy, and we are simply numb. Our emotions have dried up, and we no longer feel. At other times, the hard places can trigger fear, desperation, or panic attacks.

Currently only accepting child clients. In therapy, I strive for a safe, judgment-free space to explore your needs and values. I support kids (<12) and their parents navigating neurodiversity, big or overwhelming emotions, coping, and self-care—essential amid a neurotypical-centric world. Collaboratively, using conversation, art, play, or somatic methods, we explore how to meet your needs. Together, we navigate an often isolating, unaccommodating world to understand how it influences your experiences, relationships, and environments. We aim to understand cultural norms, rewriting expectations to align with your unmasked self.

My focus is on Relationship Counselling. This encompasses all forms of relationships on an individual, couple or group counselling basis. Often when clients come in, clarification may be needed in order for clients to fully understand their part in a relationship. If this is the case, the first sessions will be on how to communicate from a grounded, rational viewpoint. Once this is achieved, clients will move into the next phase of deep relational emotion focused counselling to allow for a deeper understanding of self and each other.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
