I am an Elder-Care & Couples Counsellor, I help you by providing assistance in dealing with everyday issues that interfere with a person’s quality of life.
We are all faced with difficulties throughout our lives, and the way we receive them will help to determine the outcome. As we age, we experience mental and physical changes that can lead to numerous challenges along the way. Maintaining healthy relationships may become difficult as we age. Being someone's caregiver is a significant challenge you may be struggling with. Now more than ever finances play a big role, especially if one member of the family requires costly care. Having healthy relationships and enjoying life can be extremely difficult when faced with one or more of these issues. However, it is possible, and I can help!

Feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and relationship conflict can feel overwhelming and difficult to cope.
One of the most difficult things to do in life is to ask for help. I understand that making the first call is stressful, and I am open to hearing your concerns as soon as we connect. I encompass a non judgmental approach, based on strength and resilience. I work collaboratively with my clients to empower them to make important changes in their lives. As a counselor, I support each client's own experience of their story. I take a holistic approach to understand the many layers that surround life challenges, to create connections and promote change.

I work with individuals, couples, and families around grief, loss, childhood trauma, anxiety and depression.
Do you feel overrun by thoughts of self-criticism? Are you exhausted trying to maintain relationships? Sometimes we function well outwardly, but inside we are fighting feelings of anxiety, sadness, anger and thoughts of never being good enough. In therapy, we connect to parts of ourselves that we try so hard to hide. We explore struggles in current situations, past experiences, and connect with our emotions. My therapeutic approach is grounded in forming a strong connection with my clients to help create a safe space in which you feel heard. My hope is to support you through your life transitions, and be part of your journey.

Specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples, I help strengthen relationships by understanding emotions, improving communication, and fostering trust and intimacy.
I help couples get closer using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). It's a way to make bonds stronger. Imagine a story of a badger and a turtle. The badger loves excitement, while the turtle prefers things to be steady. They usually get along well. But when tough times hit, their differences stand out. The badger feels lonely and gets angry, while the turtle feels unheard and wants to hide. This makes them drift apart even more. Want to make things better? Book an appointment at kelvinchung.ca, and let's work on this together.

My expertise is in working with difficulties related to cultural, familial, and relational contexts. I specialize in depression, anxiety, anger issues, professional burnout, issues with sexuality, couples issues, family conflicts, self-harming, and more. In addition to having lived in Hong Kong, I have worked diverse clients in Los Angeles and Vancouver. People who are seeking to make sense of themselves tend to find me very helpful. Former clients of mine regularly feel as though they understand their symptoms, are more free to make good life choices, and are prepared to have more fulfilling relationships overall.

For the past 30 years, I have been working as a settlement counsellor and parent educator helping immigrants, refugees, and international students who are adjusting to life in Canada. I worked at The Canadian Red Cross and managed a team of volunteers that provided emotional support to parents and caregivers dealing with critically ill children.

My focus is on Relationship Counselling. This encompasses all forms of relationships on an individual, couple or group counselling basis. Often when clients come in, clarification may be needed in order for clients to fully understand their part in a relationship. If this is the case, the first sessions will be on how to communicate from a grounded, rational viewpoint. Once this is achieved, clients will move into the next phase of deep relational emotion focused counselling to allow for a deeper understanding of self and each other.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
