Jane is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, with a masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Her therapeutic foundation is an attachment-based approach, which says we are created for connection—with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us. These relationships are vital to our existence and can be both our greatest strengths and challenges in life. Her clinical work utilizes her training in emotion-focused individual and couple therapy (EFT/EFIT), with an incorporation of techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). She offers sessions in both English and Korean.

Joyce’s clinical approach is through the attachment-based lens of Emotion Focused Therapy.
It is an honour and privilege to walk alongside people as they navigate times when they may feel pain, confusion, or stuckness. The values I bring into the counselling space are acceptance, an environment where safety can be felt, and collaborating with them to learn about how their distress is impacting them and working together with them in strengthening their sense of themselves and their relationships. In my work with my clients, I also value celebrating triumphs as they work towards being the person they want to be.

You’ve already googled “How do I deal with anxiety?”, or “I love my new baby, so, why am I sad?” Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unbalanced in your life? It might be time to revise some of the old stories and assumptions you have about yourself, so that your relationships and life are more connected to your values and needs – rather than societal expectations and norms. I work with you in the present moment to explore different ways that you can connect with yourself without judgement, as well as exploring the history and relationships that have impacted your life.

I believe counselling is a journey for people to heal from the trauma they experienced so that they are able to live freely. My role as a therapist is to provide a safe place for people and walk with them to help them deal with their hurt and pain. Thus they can resolve their emotional blockage and have both better intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships. I help clients express emotions, address past trauma, connect past experiences to current issues, identify root causes of problems, and facilitate positive changes for effective future problem-solving. I am fluent in speaking Cantonese, English and Mandarin.

Are you sick of waking up to another day of pain? Tired of trying to explain spoon theory to people committed to misunderstanding you? Are you stuck in executive dysfunction or the overwhelm that comes with neurodivergence? Maybe you've been dismissed by the very professionals meant to help you? I specialize in supporting clients who are neurodivergent and/or living with chronic pain. Using my own lived experience, and drawing upon the principles of ACT, IFS and Somatic Experiencing, I help clients find new and meaningful ways to navigate life with pain and/or neurodivergence.

The world is filled with many different facets that can end up contributing to how you experience life. I have a very humble approach to counselling. A relationship between you and I means giving you a safe and supported environment where there is no hierarchy involved of counsellor and client. Rather, it is an experience of non-judgmental conversation, allowing you to authentically express yourself and seek a more positive direction in your life.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
