I help teens, adults, couples and families understand and manage the root cause of their anxiety. People often spend a great deal of time trying to find the why. "Why am I so anxious in social settings?" Why does anxiety make my body feel this way?" "Why is my child okay at home but anxious at school?" I believe knowledge is power and having productive solutions and strategies result from asking How. "How do I manage the anxiety?" "How do I get myself to do things that are important to me?" "How do I support someone else with their anxiety?" I show and teach what to do differently.

I am a Registered Psychologist in BC and have been practicing since 2003. I do individual therapy with adults primarily from a psychodynamic perspective but incorporate other perspectives such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, and trauma-informed practices. Much of my work has focused on helping people who are experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma or stress. The length of therapy can vary. Short-term therapy can be helpful for lessening symptoms or adjusting to new life circumstances, while longer-term therapy can be useful for addressing longer-standing issues such low self-esteem or the after-effects of trauma.

I use a relational strengths-based approach with elements of mindfulness, gestalt, CBT, social justice & psychodynamic approaches, helping you decrease anxiety, improve your mood & experience more confidence & hope.
We can't say goodbye to a problem until we say hello to it. If you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, depressed, alone or hopeless, therapy is a place where it's OK to talk about the hard & confusing things, where you get to tell your truth as you see & feel it. If you experience shame, guilt, disappointment, regret, anger or resentment in your life, counselling gives you an opportunity to understand yourself better without being rushed or judged. Listening to all the parts of you that want to be heard can lead to a sense of relief, better relationships & sleep, feeling more grounded & living a more meaningful & authentic life

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy assists people in overcoming longstanding personal struggles or self-defeating patterns that have been resistant to change and brings to light personal experiences which often remain unacknowledged or whose meanings feel unclear and/or uncomfortable.
I am a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Counselling Supervisor. My practice is guided by extensive experience working with people coming from various socioeconomic backgrounds as well as many years of serving the most vulnerable communities in Vancouver’s DTES. While my approach is integrative of modern theories and techniques, it heavily relies on Psychodynamic theories and practice. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy is a highly individualized treatment whose goal is not only to alleviate the most obvious symptom. It relies on the fact that our personalities are uniquely shaped by several developmental stages.

My therapy style is an eclectic approach by incorporating psychotherapeutic modalities - psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), dialectical (DBT), and narrative - with mindfullness, attachment based practices, body & mind connection and trauma therapy.
Counsellor-Bryan Kim. People often seek out therapy when they are facing pain and uncertainty — as well they should — but working with a therapist doesn’t need to be something that only happens in a moment of crisis or at the breaking point of a relationship. Therapy is also ideal during times of transition when you simply need some extra support and perspective. You owe it to yourself to take time for focus and reflection. Emotional intelligence and healthy coping skills have extraordinary value, and you should consider therapy to be an investment in your own personal wisdom. You are the expert on your life.

My practice is grounded in psychodynamic therapy, especially psychoanalysis, which emphasizes the importance of your early childhood experiences and internal world of emotions.
Therapy is a unique relationship where you can learn about yourself, your past, and who you would like to be, through a process of analysis, discussion, acceptance, and integration. A therapeutic relationship is a space where you can speak openly and freely with a person who is trained to listen and provide insight otherwise not available to you. As a therapist, I meet you where you are at as a person, and try to understand your goals, your background, and your pain. The process is meant to lead to greater interior freedom, that can reverberate out into all aspects of your life.

Shelley loves to work with individuals who are ready and willing to change their thinking to heal for life.

I integrate perspectives from humanistic, existential, and psychodynamic theory which inform my understanding of where certain problems come from and what to do about it.
I believe that the experiences we have in our inner and outer world teach us something about the world, ourselves, and others; and they contribute to the forming of often unconscious patterns in the way we think, feel, and act. These experiences can even be stored in the body/nervous system, otherwise known as trauma. In other words, our experiences help create a “map” that show us how to navigate uncertainty, relationships with others, and relationships with our selves. I believe that people come to therapy when those 'maps' are no longer working and need updating. That's where I come in!

In my services, I prioritize your needs and integrate person-centered and psychodynamic approaches in art therapy.
I like to use puzzles as an analogy or a metaphor to describe our lived experiences. Sometimes it is just difficult to put a puzzle by yourself. There are things you are worried about, you are fearful to think of, or something you have not discovered yet. I am here to help you place the pieces together to understand yourself better. Although it may take some time, or it may not be perfect, you are not alone. You want to find a way to redefine yourself, but you do not know where to begin with or feel drained to try.

Feeling overwhelmed or pulled in so many different directions? Maybe, you feel unsettled, anxious or just “stuck.” You know that something needs to change, but are not sure where to start. Processing emotional pain or relational struggles by yourself can be very overwhelming. And it can be unbearably lonely. The people I work with are amid grief, or navigating tricky life changes. Others are struggling with relationships or carrying the weight of past hurt and trauma. I work to help clients feel what they may have avoided because it seemed too big and overwhelming.

As a fellow human being, I am intimately acquainted with my own experiences of pain. As a therapist, my heart is devoted to accompanying others on their journey so that they may not have to navigate their pain alone, understanding that suffering is often compounded when endured in isolation. At the core, human beings long for connection. We yearn to feel secure, to be seen, heard, loved, valued and accepted. When these fundamental needs go unmet we can experience an ache that feels unbearable. Our resilience allows us to bounce back, but not without bearing the scars of what it took to survive.

Psychodynamic Counsellors

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
