If you're struggling with insomnia, your might feel consumed with worries: What if I don't sleep another night? What if it just keeps getting worse? As a therapist, coach, and former insomniac, I get it - one of my passions is helping folks heal the root of their insomnia. I also work well with neurodivergent folks who are seeking support with trauma symptoms, burnout, or anxiety / depression. You may be hard on yourself, experience self-blame, have a tendency to people please, and struggle with boundaries. There's a sense that underneath these patterns is a more grounded, self-compassionate and creative version of yourself.

I primarily draw from evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT, and DBT to support you with issues related to anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), trauma, eating disorders, sleep/insomnia, and emotion regulation difficulties.
When we find ourselves always struggling with unwanted thoughts and emotions, it can start to feel like we are trapped in a never-ending battle with ourselves. Intense emotions and persistent thoughts can take us on an unpleasant ride, leaving us exhausted and unable to attend to things that matter to us. We become critical of ourselves for not being "good enough", further isolating us from ourselves and others. In our therapy, you will be offered the space to explore and learn about the kind of life you want to live and how to use your strengths and resources to build that life.

I am a Clinical Psychologist registered in both BC and Saskatchewan (website: www.drjordanmaile.com) who provides treatment for adults with depression, anxiety, worry, stress, and anger issues. Since I am registered in both BC and SK, I can see clients (virtually) from both provinces. I use primarily cognitive-behaviour therapy or CBT; if you don't know what this, I'd be happy to explain! I understand that it can be challenging to reach out for help, so I try to make the process as straightforward and simple as I can.

Therapy can be an opportunity to bring awareness to your unconscious patterns, to discover where you have choice and to connect to your authentic self. Therapy is one way you turn towards yourself, this can be challenging when we’ve spent a life time turning away. We need time, space, and guidance to transform ourselves and forge a new path.

I'm passionate about helping my clients better understand themselves. This self-awareness is the key to overcoming difficult emotions such as anxiety, depression, low mood, stress, and overwhelm. Sometimes they come to me just feeling stuck, unmotivated, and unsure of how to move forward. I work with them to find the reasons behind these challenges and then step on the path to healing. I am fascinated by people and the uniqueness of their life experiences, so the most important aspect for me is to build a trusting relationship with my clients so they feel safe, accepted, and comfortable opening up about whatever is on their minds.

Challenging situations can happen suddenly, or be built up over time, leaving us caught off guard or uncertain of the way forward. Throughout my career I have developed an expertise in counselling people going through distressing or unexpected life circumstances or difficult relationship dynamics. I assist people with grief and loss, relationship strain or change, workplace conflict, bullying, exhaustion/burnout, stress management, or anything which keeps them awake at night. If something has happened to you out of the blue, or you're fed up with some cycle in your life that keeps repeating itself, I can help you move through it.

I view psychological wellbeing as I do physical wellbeing - it requires time, care and maintenance. Making the decision to feel better when you feel down does not always come easily. If you are struggling with life, reaching out for help is the right thing to do. My private practice consults with other professionals to provide you with the best, up-to-date and proven treatment options. Some of the treatment models that I am certified in are: Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders (FBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE).

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
