I love to work with clients who want a partner in their healing. They know that the understanding and answers they are seeking are within themselves. Often my clients express a kind of anxiety - generalized to many aspects of their lives or about a specific aspect, but just as often they come to me with a more vague sense of wanting to enjoy life more or move past a feeling of dissatisfaction or apprehension that seems to "follow them" in their lives. Together, we delve into deeply exploring what that is, using body, mind and spirit as tools. My clients are motivated to experiment, explore, and reflect to find what matters most.

To be human is to feel, to think, to sometimes reel. Life can bring so much joy and so much pain, sometimes even in the same week. Connection, passion, and a deep sense of self can feel far away at times. Juggling family, work, and personal fulfillment can feel conflicting, exhausting, and at times, unattainable.

The process of choosing a counsellor begins long-before you arrive at the first session. Often there is a feeling within ourselves that something is just not right. It may be a time marked by a great deal of personal introspection or it could be an intervention from an external source -school, family, friends, your doctor - that motivates contact with a therapist. As a person-centred therapist, I will work with you to establish a meaningful relationship where you feel safe to explore and resolve issues that fit your unique needs at this moment in time.

It is part of being human to at times feel stressed, stuck, overwhelmed, or discouraged - wanting some kind of change but finding that things stay the same in spite of our efforts. There are understandable reasons for this. We have a human mind that tries to keep us safe but can limit us to seeing things in the same old ways. We inhabit a human body with a complex nervous system. We live in relationship with other people and have developed patterns of relating. We may have had difficult experiences that have put us into a “protective mode”. And with support, we have great capacity for healing and growth.

I help adults make sense of what triggers their own reactivity with their kids, where that came from, how it plays out in their relationships and how to tame those triggers to break the cycle of authoritarian and shame based parenting. It is hard work making those changes but I truly believe it’s never too late to repair those relationships. Using EMDR, I help clients process past childhood memories that hold those negative reactions, so that we can heal and parent from a more empathetic and respectful place. I truly believe that the hardest part of parenting is undoing the hardwiring we experienced during our own childhood.
