Assisting individuals and couples has been a long-standing goal in my work.
The process of choosing a counsellor begins long-before you arrive at the first session. Often there is a feeling within ourselves that something is just not right. It may be a time marked by a great deal of personal introspection or it could be an intervention from an external source -school, family, friends, your doctor - that motivates contact with a therapist. As a person-centred therapist, I will work with you to establish a meaningful relationship where you feel safe to explore and resolve issues that fit your unique needs at this moment in time.

Are you struggling in your relationship? Do you get frustrated at your partner, your mother, your co-workers or your boss? Have you thought that if you moved jobs, or countries, or changed your relationship that life would change; only to realize that you are having the same experience all over again? Sometimes we wish that people would just do what we want them to or be a certain way so that we can feel better. Often we think our relationships need to change when change must really begin within ourselves. If you are ready to look at who you are in your relationships, I'm here to help you discover who that is and why!

My practices value the therapeutic relationship and genuine respect through drawing together a holistic approach to healing, and leaving therapy with something new that can inspire balance.
I am grateful for your trust to enter the vicarious learning journey of healing, insight and balance, and self-discovery in areas that may be challenging. As a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) located in Calgary, AB, and a British Columbia Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), I am interested in offering support to children above 7 years, young adults, adults, and couples and families. This beginning may bring nerves and hesitancies, though be assured that you are not alone and I will meet you where you are in a safe, respectful space that honours authenticity and you at the center of re-balancing.

The key to healthy relationship with self and others is CONNECTION.
In a world where people are experiencing increased anxiety and isolation it is important to find a place of safety and belonging. I believe people have the resources within themselves to thrive in this ever changing and complex society and it is my responsibility to guide you through the process of finding your own strengths. I have experience working with children and youth who struggle with anxiety issues stemming from family strife, school stress and self-esteem. I do family mediation and work with clients individually or as a couple. Without relationship human beings are lost, we crave connection.

I welcome new clients who are families, couples, adults and kids (age 4-18).
To conceptualize therapy, the following might be a helpful picture. Several years ago, we decided to hatch our own chickens. After a couple of weeks, we candled the eggs to get a glimpse inside. The glimpse was amazing and mysterious—we could see life happening beneath the shell. This is what often happens in a counselling session; we look beneath the “shell” and get a glimpse of the mystery and complexity of the human experience. From this deeper looker inside, we have many choices and changes that are possible.

My view on counselling is based upon the level of trust and the quality of the connection that we are able to create together. In essence, the relationship that we develop together is key. I would wish to provide you with a safe, caring environment where you could come to feel completely heard and understood. I see my role as being more of a Guide, offering support while at the same time gently encouraging your growth by pointing out certain areas, thoughts, beliefs or behaviours that may be keeping you stuck, or that you may be unaware of.

Counselling can help individuals, couples and families in times of challenge by offering a judgement free space to be heard, explore solutions, expand perspectives and create the space for healing to occur. Clients seek counselling when they are struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, chronic pain, relationship challenges, issues with trust and communication, infidelity and or conflict management. I believe effective therapy is relationship-driven. I invite you to start on a journey where together we face the challenges or struggles you experience.

My ideal client has often dug themselves into a hole into which they can not get out of on their own. The issues will be related to a difficult relationship of some description, partner, family, community, finance, environment, financial, and certainly themselves. It is likely that their goals are uncertain and that they feel lost. Very often, my ideal client does not know what they want, but can with certainty say what they don't want.

Having worn the hats of teacher, special needs advocate, workshop and group leader, mental health worker, consultant, and clinical supervisor- I have learned the value of creating relationship first, and allowing the client to lead the process.
Human beings are complicated-so often we attempt to reach out to others using words to express our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviours. With children/youth, we see additional communication barriers because of fewer words and limited life experiences. Being part of a family system should bring safety and emotional support but sometimes this is not possible without help. My work is to enable us to become partners in the process of change- discovering strengths, new awareness and building on this. Imagine my holding up a mirror for you, so that with each session, you are able to discover and appreciate more of who you truly are.

My intention is to provide a space and therapeutic relationship that is safe, comfortable and non-judgemental so that the people I work with can share and explore the difficulties they are experiencing.
Counselling can be helpful If you're struggling, overwhelmed, stuck or interested in personal growth and increased self-awareness. I provide a therapeutic space and relationship that is built on transparency, kindness and genuine positive regard for the trials and tribulations of being a human being. Speaking from experience, reaching out to a counsellor can be incredibly difficult. In order to assist you with the process of finding a counsellor that is the best fit for your needs I offer a free phone consultation so that we can discuss your needs, how I work and the areas you would like to focus in our work together.

I also work with individuals and couples who are having issues in their relationships; individuals who have experienced trauma; women who are experiencing postpartum depression; and people struggling with acute or chronic illness.
Like many people, I grew up in an environment where we didn't talk about our struggles and emotions. From an early age, I learned to keep the difficult things inside and deal with my emotions on my own. In 1999, I became a crisis phone counsellor and realized that I wasn't the only one who had had this kind of experience. I realized that a lot of people felt the way I did and kept their emotions inside. For the first time, I learned how healing it could be to share struggles with supportive people.
I also work with individuals and couples who are having issues in their relationships; individuals who have experienced trauma; women who are experiencing postpartum depression; and people struggling with acute or chronic illness.
Like many people, I grew up in an environment where we didn't talk about our struggles and emotions. I provide counselling services for individuals, couples, teens (15+) and seniors.
Let’s work together to explore the challenges creating uneasiness, confusion and pain in your life. We will work in a comfortable, accepting space to create a meaningful, grounding experience to help you gain new awareness, explore choices and promote positive and rewarding change and self-care. Traditional talk therapies are not the only way to explore your story, and I often use sand play, art, storytelling, journaling, metaphor and imagery to reach a deeper understanding.

Couples Counselling

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
