Specialized in children and youth.
Sometimes we pretend we are fine and things are going well because don't want to burden anyone with our worries or appear "weak." Sometimes it feels like the way the world works, just does not work for us! Sometimes It can feel like we are working 10 times harder than anyone else, and we just don't meet the mark. And sometimes we feel like we just don't fit. Expectations at school, work, sports teams, home life, and our relationships can feel all-encompassing and overwhelming. Whether you are a child, a teen, an adult, or a parent, you fit here. Every ability, gender, race, sexual orientation, and culture, fits here.

I have had the honour to work with children, youth and adults in various capacities for 15 years.   During this time I have gained experience working in mental health, addictions, employment and trauma.   I have learnt that each client has the capacity to find the answers within themselves, and it is my role to walk beside them as this process unfolds.  I know what it is like to struggle to try do the right thing for yourself, your child or your family, and to not be sure whether you are over or under reacting.  Some things just don't go away- and that's when it might be time to reach out for help.

What we know now about child development, the brain, attachment is so different from what our parents knew about children and how they parented.
I help adults make sense of what triggers their own reactivity with their kids, where that came from, how it plays out in their relationships and how to tame those triggers to break the cycle of authoritarian and shame based parenting. It is hard work making those changes but I truly believe it’s never too late to repair those relationships. Using EMDR, I help clients process past childhood memories that hold those negative reactions, so that we can heal and parent from a more empathetic and respectful place. I truly believe that the hardest part of parenting is undoing the hardwiring we experienced during our own childhood.

It is a useful approach when working with children.
The process of choosing a counsellor begins long-before you arrive at the first session. Often there is a feeling within ourselves that something is just not right. It may be a time marked by a great deal of personal introspection or it could be an intervention from an external source -school, family, friends, your doctor - that motivates contact with a therapist. As a person-centred therapist, I will work with you to establish a meaningful relationship where you feel safe to explore and resolve issues that fit your unique needs at this moment in time.

I also love bringing families together in therapy to help parents understand their child’s inner worlds, strengthen attachment, and foster a collaborative approach to their child’s therapy.
Sometimes, words can’t express all the feelings inside. As an art therapist and counsellor, I use creative tools to support children and young adults through their journey of self-discovery. No artistic ability is required - it’s about exploring new ways to access the emotions and potential that are already inside. By integrating art and play in my practice, individuals who might have trouble finding the right words or who have a more developed visual vocabulary over a verbal one can find ways to communicate their experiences.

Human beings are complicated-so often we attempt to reach out to others using words to express our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviours. With children/youth, we see additional communication barriers because of fewer words and limited life experiences. Being part of a family system should bring safety and emotional support but sometimes this is not possible without help. My work is to enable us to become partners in the process of change- discovering strengths, new awareness and building on this. Imagine my holding up a mirror for you, so that with each session, you are able to discover and appreciate more of who you truly are.

The difficult child can shut down or blow up and it takes all the family focus.
Life is hard to enjoy when you're not getting through to your kids, spouse or family. Maybe you miss being carefree and less snappy. The family is disconnected and everyone is doing their own thing. It's difficult to get motivated to come together and when you do, it doesn't go well. Handling typical life challenges is difficult and no one is listening. No wonder your fuse is short and the kids are quick to yell or cry. It's like there's a pattern that can't be stopped. Feeling overwhelmed is normal in this situation. This is hard and we can start to make sense of things so you can feel better!

For nearly a decade, I have worked with children, youth and families with varying complex needs.
Life can present us with many challenges and it can be difficult to figure out where to go next. These experiences can feel isolating, but you do not have to face this alone. If you are experiencing low mood, decreased motivation, difficulties within your relationships or are feeling overwhelmed, we can work together to find a path forward.

Hello, my name is Dean Laviolette and this is a counselling practice in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. As a proud Metis, life is both precious and beautiful, just like you. Seeking counselling is an opportunity to unearth and rediscover who you really are. My approach is to build a therapeutic relationship based on trust and respect in a safe environment. Being empathetic and genuine is my commitment to quality of care to clients without being judgmental. The use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches seem to help clients self-explore, become self-aware, and learn self-care.

Child Counsellors
Child psychologists in Nanaimo, BC provide mental health therapy to children and are experts in child development.

Every comprehensive review of therapy with children shows that all credible approaches, when performed by a competent mental health clinician, produce almost the same results. About half of all kids will get better. Of those that improve, 80% will show progress in a relatively short time, while the remaining 20% will need longer-term support.

The best child therapists in Nanaimo build great relationships with the child and the parent. They also see the child's strengths and are open to hearing the child's possible solutions to the challenges the child faces. Finally, a good therapist appreciates the child's culture and is sensitive to the values of the child's community.
