Something happened to you: a trauma, a broken relationship, a difficult childhood. Maybe you are telling yourself that you “should be over it by now” or “it happened so long ago". You have big reactions that you don’t understand. All the things you usually have access to, like your logic and your reasoning, seem to go away in that moment, and all you know is that something doesn’t feel right. Maybe these big reactions feel like anxiety, depression, being highly self critical or maybe on the outside everything seems fine, but on the inside you not ok. The truth is that there is no timeline for how events impact us.

I am a Registered Psychologist (since 1995) with training and experience in clinical (& forensic) psychology. I provide caring & compassionate therapy using the most effective therapies that are matched to your needs. Psychotherapy involves developing a therapeutic relationship in which you feel at ease, set goals, and choose methods to achieve these goals. People tend to overcome or manage issues after they develop understanding of what is amiss, develop motivation (if needed), learn healthy expression of emotion, and learn to examine and confront thoughts and emotions while practicing new behaviours.

Situations can come up that are overwhelming and debilitating; this does not mean you are weak or lesser than for struggling with your mental health. My approach is to work on a style of therapy most applicable to you. For these reasons and more I don't rely on one tool or model of therapy. My method is to trickle in different areas of psychology simultaneously. If something isn't working for you we implement another strategy. The goal is to get to the heart of what is distressing you and what is preventing you from living a life more in line with your goals and values.

People seek counselling for a variety of reasons and I value each and every client for their unique experiences. Change can be scary but sometimes is needed. This change can come for a variety of reasons such as sadness, pain, loss, hope, love, and determination. I admire the strength, skills, and abilities clients develop over time throughout their therapeutic process. I have worked with clients with grief and loss, addiction, depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia, building confidence, sport psychology, caregiver burnout/compassion-fatigue, sex therapy, and intimacy work. I am LGBTQIA2S+ as well as kink positive.

In the world of problems, maybe none are more worth solving than those that plague children and families. Over 20 years, I have dedicated my practice to solving these problems by counselling parents, children & families and assisting them through high-conflict challenges. In March 2013, the Family Law Act changed whereby it now is rightly focused on the best interests of the child and makes it possible for families to work with a parental coordinator who has judicial authority to make legally binding decisions. This alternate dispute resolution allows for a more effective process so that children of high-conflict families are not stale mated.

Maybe your feeling lost, not sure who you are anymore. Starting over, empty nester, getting divorced, not nice to yourself when you make a mistake, you worry about everything. You compare yourself; you have been called a people-pleaser. You'd like to put yourself higher on your priority list, but that feels really uncomfortable. Is there something missing in your relationship like trust, intimacy or good communication? Do the same problems and arguments keep coming up? Has there been a betrayal or an affair? Do you struggle to communicate, ask for what you need and accept help from others?

It is my goal to to create an atmosphere of safety, warmth and respect that supports people to courageously tell their story, face difficult emotions, learn new ways of coping, repair relationships, transform the impact of trauma, and move towards the change they seek to make in their lives. I believe that as we give voice to our pain within the context of a safe, caring, and validating environment, we are freed to move beyond the pain towards growth, healing and wholeness.

Are you ready to process traumatic experiences and cross the bridge to a healthier you? Some of these experiences may be chronic pain, phobias, flashbacks, nightmares, obsessions, depression and anxiety. Decades ago, when I entered my therapist's office the first time, I was skeptical and nervous wondering how talking with a stranger would help me feel better. Surprisingly, I was able to understand the complexities of my issues and experience life in more meaningful ways. I am dedicated to help you break free from the experiences that are holding you back and develop resilience to live a fulfilling life.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
