Through counselling and art therapy, I help women and youth who feel stuck in areas of anxiety, depression, stress, and other mental health concerns. My aim is that you will be empowered to handle life's challenges and live life to the fullest. I use art-making to help clients gain insight, express themselves, and process emotions by incorporating both mind and body. I also provide neurodivergent affirming care and support clients in understanding and navigating ADHD and ASD. Common situations I work with are self-esteem and identity, academic/career stressors, parenting concerns, women's issues, relationships, and trauma.

I specialize in parenting, adolescent and young adult challenges, women's issues, third-culture kid re-entry counselling, trauma, anxiety, grief & loss, and depression.
I've been in practice for clinical counselling since 2010. Over the course of time, I have adopted a practical and evidence-based approach to clinical counselling. Some of my areas of expertise are anxiety, depression, inter-personal relationships, family of origin challenges, career/work and trauma. I have years of additional training under my belt but I've found that it comes down to the relationship between the counsellor and the client. In this case, it's what you know AND who you want in your corner. I enjoy working with a variety of clients, and most especially those who are ready to do the work to get the life the want!

Living in and relating to our bodies in a healthy, comfortable way can be especially difficult in this day and age, given the countless messages and pressures we experience. How we feel living in our body may effect a wide range of areas in our life, including mood, self-esteem, behaviours, and relationships with others. My approach to counselling focuses on helping my clients understand and improve the way they relate to their emotions, to their thoughts, to their body, to their self, and to others.

Like many people, I reached a point in my life where I was seeing myself repeatedly make choices that had the same negative responses. I went through divorce, over functioned when it came to others and did not know how to do my own self care. I reached out for support and through therapeutic counselling was able to heal. When looking at my own life challenges, I discovered how my adverse experiences in childhood have influenced my life’s course. Now more than ever we are faced with a lot of different stressors. My passion is to help others navigate through those stressors.

Whether you are re-taking control of your life and starting over or you are looking to set time aside for your mental wellbeing, Art Therapy can help. Art Therapy is widely used as an auxiliary treatment for depression, illness and chronic pain, addiction and trauma. Children and Youth particularly respond well to Art Therapy as it offers a less confrontational approach to counselling . I have experience working with children and youth with various challenges stemming from parental separation, anxiety disorders, grief and loss and especially difficulties with social inclusion and feeling outcasted.

Welcome to new possibilities in life. You may be looking to make a small or large change. Either way you are seeking to leave some element of your life behind in exchange for something new. This can be exciting if you are ready to embrace it. It can also create hesitation or fear because it is hard to reach out to someone you do you know. If you feel uncertain talking to someone about the changes you wish to make, it can help to take one step that will give you information about the process. Decide on one meeting to see what it is like.

No issue is too small or too big for counselling! Maybe you are dealing with past or present circumstances that have left you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, stressed, angry or sad. Perhaps you need help navigating big or small transitions or events in your life; these may be deeply painful or even wonderful, yet anxiety provoking. Struggling with pregnancy/postpartum/birth trauma? Maybe you want to develop mind+body health, self-compassion, and rediscover your true self. If you're ready to feel heard and supported and you're willing to engage in the counselling process with courage and openness, therapy can help.

Have you recently given birth? Have you suffered a loss? Are you feeling traumatized after your birth experience or feeling overwhelmed and scared navigating the fourth trimester. Are postpartum symptoms taking over? Feeling detached from your spouse, stressed, sleep deprived, self conscious or not like yourself is very unsettling. You feel as though you dont have anyone to talk to; friends and family don't truly understand what you are experiencing. You might be hiding your true thoughts and feelings about how everything you are living through is affecting you.

The clients I work with understand that there is a spiritual thread that weaves beneath the surface of their lives, and they are seeking guidance on how to re-connect to this important aspect of who they are. I commonly work with fertility struggles, grief processing, depression, overwhelm, addictions, anxiety, relationship conflict, eating disorders, low self esteem, trust issues, and clients who are simply unhappy with the current state of their life. Ultimately, my clients are searching for balance between the mind, body and spirit aspects of self, which when in alignment, can lead to a heart-centered, joyful, fulfilling life.

I remember my first experience with a counselor…at first, I was overwhelmed, anxious, and a bit apprehensive. As I shared my story, my skepticism decreased and I was comforted by the thought that I was in control of my life. There are many challenges that can get in the way of healthy relationships with others and our own self, but you don't have to face these issues alone. I believe that a counselor is a guide in a clients journey of healing and self-awareness. My practice is rooted in a holistic approach and I utilize techniques that integrate physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual health. I speak Punjabi & English.

Starting therapy and seeing the impact of positive changes was wonderful, not only because I felt like I was slowly getting my life back, but it showed me something that I have never thought possible - that you can heal the trauma from sexual abuse. The journey... was so beautifully freeing that it empowered me to continue the hard work of facing my own trauma and helping others heal theirs - Dr. Jem Tosh, 'Sexual Abuse and Surviving with(in) Psychology' published in MeToo: Counsellors and Psychotherapists Speak About Sexual Violence (2020).

Are you stressed at work and can’t sleep at night? Feeling worried, stuck and overwhelmed? I understand that these experiences can lead to feelings of loss – loss of control, loss of freedom, and loss of passion for your life. You might have been trying different strategies on your own, trying to power through the problem, relying on will power alone. Truth is - it’s not that you need to “work harder”. What you need is someone with the right knowledge and skills to guide you through the process and point you in the right direction. You are in the right place and you have options.

I invite you to take a deep breath. Sometimes, Life can feel all too much. You may be feeling like you cannot continue living like you are, feeling dark, heavy, anxious, disconnected from, or lost in your feelings. I support youth, young adults, and adults with understanding their relationship to self and others through a holistic lens. This means we work together to process unfelt feelings, to be curious about persistent nagging thoughts and patterns, and to be present to how this all expresses itself in and through your body. I am passionate about showing you that getting help can be a safe, insightful, and healing endeavour.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
