Psych, I work from an existential base.
‘Hearts are not the burdens they carry; but the burdens they carry can drive their extremes' (Richard Schwartz, 2018). There are times when we feel truly burdened: exhausted, confused, immobilized, distressed, anxious, in relationship discord or overwhelmed. As challenging as these experiences can be, we can grow our strength and grow our courage in our willingness to approach them. I work with clients to assist in living with more calm, courage, compassion, meaning, and deep connection.

I integrate perspectives from humanistic, existential, and psychodynamic theory which inform my understanding of where certain problems come from and what to do about it.
I believe that the experiences we have in our inner and outer world teach us something about the world, ourselves, and others; and they contribute to the forming of often unconscious patterns in the way we think, feel, and act. These experiences can even be stored in the body/nervous system, otherwise known as trauma. In other words, our experiences help create a “map” that show us how to navigate uncertainty, relationships with others, and relationships with our selves. I believe that people come to therapy when those 'maps' are no longer working and need updating. That's where I come in!

My therapeutic style is person-centred, and my primary modalities include Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness and Existential therapy.
You may be experiencing concerns related to trauma, family history, relationships, identity development, personal growth, spirituality and sexuality/sexual identity. If so, the process of finding support can be challenging, and it can difficult to know how to find a clinician with a style that best supports you and your concerns. I believe that the first step in the process is to provide a space to support understanding your unique experiences and perspectives.

Welcome! Kathryn Kriitmaa here, I'm grateful that your search has led you here. Many of us experience overwhelming emotions that we can’t make sense of, struggle with unhealthy outlets for emotional safety, have insecurities in our relationships when our needs don’t get met, and find it safer at times to hide our real selves from others. Together, we'll collaborate to expand your self-awareness, take intentional action towards your goals, and gently look inward to deeply nurture the parts of you that need healing. My approach is integrative and holistic, attending to your psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

Relationships are key to our well-being, whether that is with our spouse, boss, children, in-laws, friends or family members. If you find yourself in repeating patterns of misunderstanding, have suffered a loss through death or separation, you're feeling anxious, depressed, or not fulfilled in your relationships, it may be time to get perspective or some tools and strategies to start shifting things for the better.

Hello there and welcome!! My name is Alexandria and I am a Registered Social Worker. I would welcome the opportunity to offer you support and guidance through any challenging life experience you are currently facing. My specializations include: Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder and Psychopathic Disorder. Alexandria feels many individuals and/or counsellors do not truly understand the magnitude of the damage and devastating effect on others that personality disorders create. Through personal experience she has gained a greater understanding and compassion for those impacted.

Existential Counsellors

How does existential therapy work?

Existential therapy focuses on a patient’s inner experiences. The therapist tries to help the individual comprehend and alleviate symptoms by exploring their interior life. By confronting negative disquiet and emotions, the individual will hopefully become more open to finding meaning and purpose. This therapy can be administered to individuals or groups.

Is existential therapy evidence-based?

Existential therapy is an evidence-based practice. Research has determined that existential therapy can lead to significant improvement in the mental health of patients, and for some people it can be just as effective as cognitive behavioural therapy. The benefits of existential therapy are enduring, even long after treatment has ended.

How long does existential therapy last?

The goal of existential therapy is to understand a person’s internal experiences, which may sound like a lengthy process, but it does not have to be so in-depth. However, sessions are not short-term, and therapy can continue for months or up to a year. And because patients learn the theory behind existential therapy during treatment, they can also practice its tenets throughout life after therapy sessions have been completed.

Is existential therapy effective?

According to research, many patients find success with existential therapy. Researchers note that the therapy is particularly useful in improving feelings of isolation, feelings of purposelessness, as well as conditions such as anxiety and depression. Improvements in problem areas can persist even after the end of existential therapy, as individuals can continue working on themselves by using the tools they’ve developed during treatment.
