I am a trained trauma and play therapist with years of experience supporting children, youth and adults struggling with individual, relationship and family challenges.
Are you struggling to keep up with the many demands of life? Do you feel disconnected from yourself and those around you? Does past trauma affect your ability to feel safe in the present? Are you tired of navigating systems that don’t make sense or support you? You are not alone! We are all biologically wired for love and connection, but when you fight each day to keep your head above water it can be extremely isolating and asking for help might feel scary and overwhelming. I would like to assure you that you are worthy of help and compassionate support is available to you and your family.

in psychology and a Masters of Science in Family Studies.
Twenty plus years ago my dream was to work with people in a way that would enhance their lives. I envisioned an environment that would provide an opportunity to develop creative problem-solving abilities. I envisioned an environment that would enhance tolerance, flexibility, and adaptability. I continue, to this day, to make this dream a reality. And...I believe I have done so. My work is centered around enhancing the lives of the individual, the couple, the family, and the extended family. I am very proud of the Kamloops Centre for Therapy. It, like myself, has evolved over the years.

I believe in creating balance between the physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual elements that define who we are. I value an integrative approach to counselling with a strong foundation built on humanistic, family of origin and client-centered principles. In practice this means my energy is directed toward building a relationship based on empathy, positive regard, and genuineness. These are necessary elements in the change process. My aim is to always provide an environment where clients feel safe, respected, and valued. Only then does positive personal growth begin.

My job is to be the calming centre where you can begin to see your needs and path forward, or work with your family in session to grow and strengthen your relationships together.
Have you been looking for a therapist who is down to earth and has the broad experience to understand all the things you are juggling day to day? Are your relationships suffering and you just can't find the time or the right words to set things back on course. Our world has become so fast paced and with so many expectations to be your best self. Sometimes it can feel like a lot. It can get overwhelming very quickly. Sometimes there needs to be a safe space to unload that, process your own goals and repair or strengthen your most valued relationships.

My training and experience includes helping those with addictions, anxiety, depression, emotional regulation issues, trauma, and relationship/family issues.
I am here to provide a safe, non-judgemental, and respectful space to investigate how you can achieve the mental health and wellbeing you need. For you, it may have gotten to the point where unsolicited advice from others became tiring, or maybe some people in your life continuously tell you to "just stop" or "go for a walk and your depression will disappear because... endorphines". Maybe you are finally ready to have someone take the time to truly understand you and your situation so you can understand yourself. Whatever your reasons, I am guessing that you are reading my profile because you are ready for a change.

I have been a counsellor for over 30 years and work diligently in creating a warm, safe environment to address all personal issues. Clients share their personal concerns and learn different ways of coping with the stresses in their lives. My expertise includes individual; marital/couple and child counselling. Areas such as child/parent conflicts; divorce adjustment; step-family/ blended family issues. Anxiety and depression hamper us to be fully aware and 'make us stuck;' learn new ways of coping with these debilitating conditions. One of my areas of strength is completing VIEW OF THE CHILD Reports for Court; necessary during family separation.

Couple and Family Counselling is the focus of my practice. Relationship dynamics can be complex. I work with couples and family members in a collaborative and non-judgmental way to identify what is working and what is not within the family system. I also specialize in working with trauma, first responders (BCEHS and the RCMP) and with individuals who have experienced, witnessed, or perpetrated violence. I believe the details of my clients lived experiences are important and I will work hard to understand clients responses, and the larger context. I have over 10 years’ experience working with individuals, couples, and families.
Couple and Family Counselling is the focus of my practice. Relationship dynamics can be complex. I work with couples and family members in a collaborative and non-judgmental way to identify what is working and what is not within the family system. I have worked many years with people from all walks of life and have experienced first hand relationship trauma, challenging family dynamics and the effects of addiction.
Life can brings unexpected changes: Relationships come to an end; There may be Infidelity, failure, and disappointments. For those who value spirituality and faith there is a loss of hope. Alcohol and/or drug issues take control. If any of this resonates with you it may be a good time to consider counselling. I have a passion for people who struggle with chronic anxiety, aging gracefully, faith issues, addictions, depression, and relationship strife. I also have good understanding of the complicated world of blended families, those who struggle with work/family balance, and men who struggle with gaming/porn addictions.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
