I believe that each person and family is unique and deserves a unique approach to therapy. My practice is primarily informed by cognitive behavioral therapy (including mindfulness and acceptance, and commitment), as well as dialectical behavioral, interpersonal, and solution-focused therapy. I am a registered social worker with the BC College of Social Workers, and received my Master of Social Work from the University of British Columbia, as well as an undergraduate degree in Psychology.

I am a trained clinical therapist (Masters of Social Work) with almost 20 years experience in anti-oppression social work. My work is collaborative, holistic and sincere - the two central modalities I use are Internal Family System and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Everyone deserves to be heard, to be understood, and to have someone with them when the world doesn't feel safe. This is what life is about and what matters to me -love, connection, being right here, with you.

Laura provides her clients the opportunity to explore personal problems and potentials, resolve conflicts, and facilitate self awareness and understanding. Laura’s view of healing is holistic, paying attention to not only what is said but how the body responds. Through a mindfulness based approach, Laura creates space and opportunity for clients to explore and connect to their inner needs while providing a safe space for these needs to be expressed. This approach allows mind/body integration. Through this process, clients begin to experience clarity, balance and rest.

I have been privileged to work as a psychotherapist for almost thirty years and continue to be in awe of the strength and resilience and wisdom inherent in each person I meet. My role as a psychotherapist is to help you access what is inside you and heal from what has prevented you from becoming the best version of yourself. Together we will transform loss and trauma and life transitions into new hope and possibilities for a life that is psychologically rich and rewarding. Therapy is a relationship with yourself where you re-discover and cultivate the real you. It's about wellness and vitality and creating a life you love.

Life can be messy, difficult, and complicated. (So much more that we expect!). Navigating this is tricky - human beings are complex individuals and we each face unique issues and challenges. Therapy offers a space to untangle the discomfort (while also building resilience and skills to respond to future challenges) so you can focus on living the life you want. Building upon my corporate background, I specialize in navigating challenges between professional and personal worlds. I often work with entrepreneurs or professionals (in high-pressure, finance or medical roles) and young adults in their early career stages.

My goodness mental health and relationship challenges can be wild, and you don't need to navigate them alone. Whether this is for yourself, family, dependent, or relationship, I am deeply passionate about mental health and certain positive change can occur together. While therapy can seem nebulous, I believe in demystifying the counselling process, using evidence-based best practices, and empowering you through education and insights to address the roots of your concerns.

You are a deep thinker, a psychology nerd and a truth seeker. You are seeking what it means to be living a meaningful life. Finding your soul's purpose is one of your driving principles in life. Perhaps you identify with an anarchist spirit that is determined to design your life and the structure of your relationships for freedom. You are motivated by the fear of leaving this earth, not having lived your life to your fullest, completely governed by unconscious drives, or not having examined your suffering. Perhaps you can no longer bear not speaking your truth and living your most authentic expressions of self.

Do you find yourself feeling stressed, overwhelmed and anxious? Longing for a sense of peace, calm, and hope? Life can be challenging, and if we don’t have the tools to cope- some moments it can feel downright impossible. Sometimes we need actions to take, and sometimes we just need someone to truly listen. As a therapist, I consider myself not only an educator and guide, but a fellow human being here to support you where you’re at.

Healing Waves Counselling was created to provide people with a different type of healing experience. We live in such a fast-paced society where we are constantly striving to compete, do better, and make more money that we forget to be present. We want people to be able to work through their trauma and have them feel comfortable in their own skin, to reconnect people with themselves, reconnect with nature and the earth. Reconnecting to the environment and our surroundings can be so healing and grounding. We are here to walk with the client side by side on their journey. They are the experts of their own

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
