No one ever said it’s easy being a thinking, feeling, spiritual being. You are not alone in feeling anxious, depressed, grieved, angry or disconnected in a relationship. Most of what troubles us is caused by a perceived need to protect ourselves from injury. Fortunately, we all have resources for healing. In a compassionate and safe environment, I enable you to adopt an accepting, compassionate, and curious relationship with your emotions and behaviours. With this foundation of healing and renewal, we become agents of our own healing. We steer our ship with confidence and vision, even when the seas are tossing and turning.

Do you want to improve some area of life? Do critical inner voices or thoughts make you feel bad about yourself? Are you feeling unnecessary shame, fear, or guilt? Are you anxious or fearful in safe situations? Sex life not the way you want it? Are you healing from illness? Do you avoid doing ordinary things because they make you uncomfortable? Is internalized oppression draining the joy of life? Can your marriage use a tune-up? Do you just want to improve your performance at work or in the arts or sports? I also use standard techniques such as Somatic Experiencing, DBT, Narrative Therapy, Family Therapy and modern Hypnotherapy.

I have been in private counselling practice for 15 years, and in wellness, personal development and the media for 25 years. My practice draws self-referring, high-functioning adults/couples with addiction, phobia, anxiety, depression and attachment disorders affecting their lives beyond their historical, current or perceived ability of self-control. In couples, I usually begin individually to create safety and self-awareness, then back together towards clear self-advocacy, expression and to build trustful communication. EMDR in the couple context can clear a lot of old trauma and wounded pattern-associations that mire us in destructive relational dynamics.

For more than 30 years I have counselled people having problems with depression, anxiety and life adjustment, and as well, those wanting to grow personally. I identify with the Humanistic/Positive Psychology approach and am primarily a Rogerian by practice - utilising active listening and communicating back of understanding. Not only is this very affirming and helps people find relief from their problems and concerns, but they come to more fully understand their assumptive world, achieve greater self-understanding and acceptance and a desire to develop constructive and fruitful changes in their outlook and behaviour.

Clients typically see me for issues ranging from depression, anxiety, trauma, and relationship problems, to loneliness, anger, and the increasingly common 'trifecta' of addictions: tech, porn, and recreational substances. I regularly work with people from multicultural backgrounds, and those confronting crises of worldview, identity and belief. This includes clients struggling with their own cultural and religious upbringing, or changes in ideology and self-image. I also have an interest in the management of chronic pain and illness.

Change is always hard. Whether something or someone in our life needs to change — or it already has — or we've decided that something inside ourselves needs to shift, it's never easy. But living with the feeling that something isn't right is hard too — it can leave us with frustration and resentment in our relationships, dip us down into depression and exhaustion, or put us in a pattern of all-too-familiar anxiousness, submissiveness, and anger. If any of this sounds familiar, counselling can help.

I often see clients who struggle with issues such as relationship difficulties, addiction, anxiety, or depression, but I also attend to positive aspirational approaches including leadership development, performance improvement and wellbeing support. What ever the challenge, I assist clients to engage in therapeutic work that goes beyond symptom management, aiming for transformative change and a renewed sense of hope.

“Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional”. This wisdom reflects my approach to therapy. You can’t prevent storms from happening, you can hardly stop others from hurting you, and you may never get rid of your inner critic’s voice entirely. There's no way to erase the memories of past traumas. Yet, there surely is a way to lessen the burden, to ease the struggle, to change your relationship with others and - most importantly - with Self. Discover your way to cease the unnecessary suffering and reclaim balance and joy. How?

I have been a mental health counsellor/therapist for over 25 years. In my experience, two very important factors in therapy are trust and safety. I believe trust is earned by the therapist and safety is experienced by the client as therapy progresses. What I have learned from my clients is that even when they experienced hopelessness at first, change was possible, and when there was change, no matter how small, they felt hopeful. My aim is to support clients and help them identify and achieve their short and long term goals, at school, at work, in their family and private lives.

I imagine you are viewing my profile as there is alignment with my training and specialization with what you hope to work on in therapy. I'd love to connect with you to hear what's going on and see how I can best support and guide you. Depending on what you want to work on, I can be as practical and as process/exploration focussed as would be helpful. My hope is to help you get what you're looking for and needing out of therapy.

His statement: "Mental health support, especially in Asia, is still clouded by stigma today. I am here to ensure that you get the best care for your mental health in a safe and confidential environment. It's not easy deciding to take the first step forward, but know that by just picking up the phone and booking a time with my reception staff, you have already taken that first step. Do you feel stuck in which direction to take in life? As if you're lost in a forest. Confused about what to do or where to go to find relief. Maybe you've felt like something in your life has been off, and you want to seek clarity to gain insight into some of your life experiences. The unsettling question, which seems easier at times to tuck away for later, tugs at your heart and mind, "What's happening to me?" Wow, the fact that you are allowing space for these unsettling wonderments takes courage.

Something's in the way. Sadness, anxiety, loneliness, stress, worry, depression, substance use, loss. The world is heavy, and that weight can be paralyzing. You know that you have something to offer. You're compassionate, creative, intelligent, sensitive, loving, and yet strong-willed, skeptical, and maybe even a bit rebellious. It seems as though you don't fit the mold, but it's the mold that doesn't fit you. Social isolation, feeling disconnected from others, from the world, adds to the weight, to the pain. If you could only break free from the self-doubt that cultures and institutions feed, the world might just open up for you.

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
