Ethical, caring and safe relationships form the fabric of a rich and joyful life, therefore, individual and community healing go hand in hand. We believe in the healing power of a therapeutic relationship, where clients can feel valued and empowered to envision, practice and create change. Creating this relationship is the starting point for therapy. In all aspects of our work - therapy, assessment, consultation and education - we are committed to our clients and to the bonds of family, friendship and community that sustain them. We are proud of the way that we, as a practice, contribute to community health.

Hello and welcome. I work with those who are experiencing trauma, dealing with anxiety, or struggling to find their way out of burnout. I believe that regardless of what we've been through, we all have the capacity to re-connect with who we really are (that inner “self” or “pilot light” that’s always there). I strive to guide individuals in connecting with their true selves and in navigating a path forward that is in line with what’s truly important to them. In sessions with me, you can expect to be met with warmth, curiosity, authenticity, and at times, humour.

We carry our life story within us. Each person has a unique collection of joys and triumphs, pleasures and pain that imprints their biology. These imprints, formed unconsciously, influence our feeling states, our decision making, self-esteem, and the way we see the world. They shape the way our nervous systems respond and adapt to challenges and change. The imprints that hold the most charge are often formed in childhood or in response to trauma, and they have the ability to create mental, emotional, and physical imbalance—to create a state of disregulation. However, we each possess the profound capacity for change.

"We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future." George Bernard Shaw-- While working together there is but one expert and, ultimately, one person responsible for your life. That person is you. I consider it an honour to work alongside people who are motivated for change and moving forward in life. We are all very complex and unique I seek to help you identify and address your needs, challenges and goals from a respectful and supportive role. "Freedom is is what you do with what's been done to you." Jean-Paul Sartre

Many of the clients I work with are feeling "stuck" and are looking for support to move towards their goals. Feeling stuck often coincides with feelings of depression and anxiety. My clients and I work together to develop healthy coping strategies and to achieve satisfaction in their daily lives. My therapeutic work is grounded in humanistic and constructivist theories, meaning I believe the relationship between the client and the therapist is essential for fostering change and growth. I am a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of BC and have over 15 years of training and experience in psychotherapy.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
