Your struggles do not define you and it’s okay to not be okay. Coping mechanisms that previously worked no longer work. We may need to slow down, sit with our struggles, like our low self esteem, our perfectionism, or our anxiety, and explore how we feel inside and what is coming to the surface. Many of us avoid our struggles as a means to cope but that doesn’t solve them. Rather they continue to appear and we react in situations when we least expect it by getting angry or shutting down. By learning to sit with our emotions, without feeling overwhelmed or stuck, we can process our struggles, and take steps to move forward.

Life is a journey in which we all encounter unexpected twists and turns, detours and obstacles... The journey can also be full of possibility, discovery and joy. Counselling can provide support and strategies to help you navigate the challenges with greater ease, and enhance the positive experiences with a sense of meaning and purpose. My goal in counselling is to foster an environment in which you may achieve greater understanding and compassion for yourself, find ways to ease distress, and create more clarity, peace and stability in your life.

It's not easy taking that first step. You've probably been thinking about it for awhile. Opening up to a stranger, sharing personal thoughts and feelings, fear of being judged; these are some of the reasons people put off going for help. I get it! I'm here to give you a soft place to land, a place where you can speak and be heard, and to process your unique life experiences. Together, we can work on coping skills, grounding techniques or just talk it out, whatever you need to work through any challenging emotions in order to move towards healing.

Hi, my name is Nashina (pronounced: nuh-she-na). I am a cis, South-Asian woman and my pronouns are she/her. I am a licensed therapist in beautiful (so-called) Vancouver, BC. I’m a wife, a Mother, forest frolicker and I LOVE what I do. Therapy is almost entirely about relationship and trust building; that begins in our therapeutic relationship. Together we explore (and identify) your needs, values and what you wish to transform towards ( examples: intimacy in relationships, more confidence or self-trust, better communication, cultivating a sense of belonging). From this place, long-lasting change and healing can occur. Small is all.

After attending our groups, clients report feeling less isolated, more connected with others, and more able to handle difficult emotions and stressful situations. Whether their default is to express their anger outwards or direct it inwards as resentment and self-criticism, my clients present with a desire to stop damaging the relationships they care the most about. Many show up to learn how to deal better with someone close who displays a lot of anger. My clients want to create intimate relationships, emotional intelligence, and conflict resolution. They want to take ownership of their lives and feel proud of their choices.

Through both my work as a therapist and my own life, I've often found myself in awe the innate human capacity to heal. And the more I do this work, the more in awe I am at how so much of healing begins with no longer being alone in hard things. In my therapeutic work I've witnessed the incredible resilience and transformation that can emerge when a safe space is held for one's story and experience. I continue to stand in awe of that resilience.

When one individual tries to solve multiple problems at the same time, things can easily get overwhelming. My sessions focus on helping my clients narrow down their problems to manageable goals, help them detangle their thoughts and gain clarity on their situation. I help them manage overwhelming emotions, such as anxiety, guilt and shame, and gain a sense of direction when dealing with life transitions. My approach helps my clients focus on parts of their problem that are within their control, while making sure that these changes have a trickle effect on aspects they want to change, but have no control over.

Life can be challenging, and you deserve support. Yet, we as women feel guilty for prioritizing ourselves all too often. We are used to putting others’ needs and comfort before our own. Perhaps you notice being very critical of yourself. Maybe you’re struggling with your relationships, life changes or overwhelming emotions like anxiety, anger or shame. You might be asking yourself: “Who am I? Is this the life I want?” I want you to know that you don’t have to deal with it alone. In my practice, I specialize in helping women navigate challenging life transitions with compassion, care and deep emotional support.

Many people who struggle with infertility, miscarriage, birth trauma, or postpartum depression and anxiety report feeling alone and that no one understands them. These challenges can trigger complex emotions such as feeling lost, helpless, angry, numb, or hopeless about the future. For many individuals, when they feel lost or hopeless, they just want to feel validated and understood. When they're feeling stuck, they want to know that it won't be like this forever and they may want help finding their way forward. Working with a therapist who understands these struggles can help a person feel seen and allow them to find their way.

Relationships can be complex and navigating them can feel daunting, to say the least. When a relationship has been in a state of disconnection for a period of time, it can feel impossible to even know where to begin. It could be that you seem to have the same argument over and over again, your sex life has fizzled out, infidelity, general life changes that have impacted your ability to connect. Or maybe you just feel bored and unsatisfied. I work with people of all genders who are interested in improving their relationships and/or sex life, no matter where they are at. Single, coupled and everywhere in between.

I welcome diverse clients of all cultures, genders, and sexual orientations. I appreciate that we all come with unique stories and histories, and I think it is important to recognize and celebrate how these shape the way that we experience the world. I feel honoured and privileged to walk alongside my resilient clients in their personal healing journeys. I work with many clients who feel like they are not themselves. My clients often describe "knowing" one thing to be reality but "feeling" like something else is true. Through EMDR, I can help support this integration between mind and body so you can meet your goals.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
